I totally agree with you that one of the frustrations seeing cyberpanhandlers, especially if you know their situation is not actually dire, is that it makes one evaluate one's own situation versus theirs. When times are hard, I know my frustration level goes up, because I want to focus on fixing the problem, and not evaluating whether it is worse than the person who is trying to get me to fix their problem for them.
I used to build sets and basketball floors in Virginia. The set building was actually really fun. The most fun was when we build a giant razor for a corporate theater production for Gillette's top salespeople, for the launch of the Gillette Sensor. The basketball floor was kinda awful and caused regular injury and paid even worse, but we had to take those gigs in order to also get Kiss or Poison or whoever was coming through town.
