"The two of them!" Detective Nadeshda Krusenstern said, exasperated.
"What have they done now?" asked Public Prosecutor Wilhelmine Klemm, amused at the detective's frustration.
"The usual," Nadeshda said. "They're both reasonably intelligent--how long is it going to take them to get a clue?"
"Let me guess," said Klemm. "Our dear Professor Doctor Doctor walked into a trap and had to be rescued by the gallant Hauptkomissar."
"Got it in one," replied Nadeshda.
"Whereupon ... " Klemm thought for a moment. "How does it usually go? Oh, yes! Thiel accused Boerne of interfering in his case and Boerne flounced back to the morgue."
"It's just as if you'd been there," laughed Nadeshda. "We can tell they're in love-why can't they?"
"Because we're on the outside looking in," proclaimed Klemm wisely. "It's harder to see what's right in front of your nose."
"Well, yes," agreed Nadeshda. "Also, they're guys. Which makes them ..."
The two looked at each other and said at the same moment, with a firm nod, "Hopeless."
"Agreed," said Klemm. "Would you pass me my cigarettes?"
Nadeshda reached over and got Klemm's cigarettes from the nightstand. "Mind if I have one, too?" she asked.
"Of course I don't mind," said Klemm, shaking one from the box and handing it to her. "I didn't know you smoked."
"Only after sex," said Nadeshda, lighting up with a saucy wink.
"Then I hope you get to enjoy them often from now on," said Klemm, and leaned over to kiss her.
