Another night-dark street, another empty search. "It's time for us to check in, Brother Chu," said Guo Changcheng. Then he noticed Chu Shuzhi's sudden wariness. "Unless we shouldn't."
Chu Shuzhi looked around, eyes narrowed. "They're here, Changcheng. A dozen, at least. Don't turn around."
"Acknowledged," Guo Changcheng whispered, motionless.
Vampires. The name conjured up terrifying images: dripping fangs, drained victims, perpetrators escaping as clouds of bats. Guo Changcheng had never understood how some people found that fantasy attractive. And now real-life vampires, risen from the grave of Professor Ouyang's forbidden experiments, were stalking the streets of Dragon City at night.
"We can't take down that many by ourselves," said Guo Changcheng softly. "But since we haven't checked in, the team will be here in about five minutes." We only need to survive that long, was his unspoken thought.
Chu Shuzhi nodded. "Changcheng, I need you to trust me," he said. Guo Changcheng barely had time to nod before Chu Shuzhi had pushed him up against the nearest building, one hand on Guo Changcheng's shoulder, the other cupping his chin and pushing it up so that the back of Guo Changcheng's head was against the wall.
Then Chu Shuzhi put his mouth on Guo Changcheng's neck. Guo Changcheng gasped. The sharp contrast between Chu Shuzhi's domineering body language and the tenderness with which he was nuzzling Guo Changcheng's neck was electrifying; the contact of Chu Shuzhi's lips and teeth, intensely erotic.
Guo Changcheng couldn't think clearly; his mind buzzed with half-formed thoughts: Chu Shuzhi must be trying to pass himself off as a fellow vampire to buy time until the rest of the team showed up. Guo Changcheng wondered whether it was working ... he also realized now why some people found vampires attractive ... could Chu Shuzhi feel how hard his heart was pounding? ... the vampires hadn't attacked yet ... was it possible they were fooled?
A single overriding thought stood out clearly against the buzzing background: If only this were real.. If only Chu Shuzhi were really kissing him, rather than pretending to bite, if only this could be a prelude to more ... He couldn't resist reaching up with one hand and stroking the back of Chu Shuzhi's head, hoping his colleague wouldn't mind. After all, it was just for show.
Chu Shuzhi made a sound-a deep, guttural, hum-in time with the stroking, and Guo Changcheng allowed himself to hope.
