Rat Patrol fic recs for DC Slash

Here are the Rat Patrol fic recommendations I made for Fandom of the Week on DCSlash this week!

Monday:

Fandom of the Week: Rat Patrol fic recs
"Return to Duty" by Deb Hicks.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/190258
Deb's "Duty" series, which I was proud to publish in Flanking Maneuvers, was rightly popular for its serious Troy/Dietrich relationship arc, blended with exciting action and hot hot lovin'. It's hard to pick a favorite, but you can't go wrong with this one: a tension-filled joint mission into S.S. headquarters, where Troy and Dietrich have sex in a very small bathroom. I mean, photograph critical information for the Allies. And have sex!

If you'd like to start with something shorter, here's a wonderfully angsty and UST-y short piece by Nomad called "Temporary Truces."

Tuesday:
Fandom of the Week: Rat Patrol fic recs
Today we're looking at the Rat Patrol's privates! I mean, Private Tully Pettigrew and Private Mark Hitchcock. What did you think I meant? ;-) Hitch and Tully are less often represented in RP slash than the others, but they hold up their end. So to speak.

Sentimental by generalsleepy

No God or General by generalsleepy

"Sentimental" is a lovely portrayal of quiet affection; I particularly like the characterization of Tully. "No God or General" is one of the rare, longer and more serious Hitch/Tully pieces that I've seen; I particularly liked Moffitt's role in discussing with Hitch the value of diverse perspectives.

Wednesday:

Fandom of the Week: Rat Patrol Fic Rec
Today being Wednesday, I’m designating it as No-Hump Day! Today’s rec is one of my very favorite gen stories.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/10401099

When I first caught the Rat Patrol bug in the mid-1990’s, I went through all the multimedia zines that I had bought for their Star Trek, Doctor Who, Blakes 7, and other fandoms, hoping to find Rat Patrol. I struck gold with the zine OF DREAMS AND SCHEMES, which had published superb Ratty fic by RK MacBride. It was like Christmas.

If you’re still reading, here’s the author’s summary of the story:
Captain Dietrich and his driver have survived a serious vehicle crash only to find themselves on foot, injured, and out of water in the middle of nowhere. Can they find help before it's too late?
The Rat Patrol is headed back to their base after a successful mission when they see a lone man in a German uniform running toward them, shouting and waving his arms. Who is he? Is he leading them into a trap?

Thursday:
Fandom of the Week: Rat Patrol Fic Recs
Today is Off the Beaten Path day, as we look at a couple of stories that are online--but not on AO3!

"Arena of Death" by C. Jerry Ueberall
C.J. Ueberall's "Pebble" series, another awesome set of stories that I was thrilled to publish in FLANKING MANEUVERS, begins with an alternative version of the episode "Chain of Death Raid," in which Troy and Dietrich are forced to fight one another to survive. The slashiness is slow-building and very satisfying.

"The Public Schoolboys Raid" by Randi Leer
Randi Leer wrote a number of yummy short pieces for FM; this one features the less-common pairing of Hitch and Moffitt.

Friday:
"I open at the close," to quote Deathly Hallows. On our last day of Rat Patrol fic recs, I offer what is, to the best of my knowledge, the very first Rat Patrol slash story ever written.

"Raids End in Lovers' Meetings" by Amedia, with illustrations by Sahara
https://archiveofourown.org/works/133056

Oddly enough, it isn't Troy/Dietrich, which is quite understandably the most common pairing, but Moffitt/Dietrich. Here's the summary from the zine flyer:
Ten years ago, as a summer exchange student at the University of Cairo, Hans Dietrich had an affair with the son of his archaeology professor. He never dreamed they'd meet again--on opposite sides of a war.
