When Sulu reached his quarters after the going-away party, he thought they'd be empty. He was pleased to be wrong.
"I know I said goodbye at the party," Chekov said, "but I hoped you wouldn't mind if I stopped by."
Sulu accepted the proffered bottle of vodka with suspiciously bright eyes.
Chekov looked closely at him. "What is it?"
"I feel as if my heart is being torn in two," Sulu said.
"You can't pass up a ship of your own," Chekov said. "You've worked so hard to earn it."
"But it means leaving you," Sulu said. "I thought about requesting you, but that would be torture."
Chekov nodded, understanding. Whatever their differences in rank, Sulu had never been his direct supervisor. But as captain of the Excelsior, Sulu would no longer have the luxury of fraternizing with his colleagues. "I can't imagine a worse outcome for us," Chekov admitted, "than being together everyday, but being forbidden to ... do what we do."
Sulu glanced at the chronometer. "I've got an early morning," he said. "But we could make it an early night."
"Something for you to remember for the next five years," Chekov agreed.
Sulu laughed. "No pressure, Pavel."
