I went to see "Zatōichi" yesterday!
In Duesseldorf, there is an event called "Japanes Movie week".
You can watch Japanese movies in a small movie theater for free!
They are shown with Japanese audio track and German subtitles.
The exams were done and the end of the semester had to be celebrated!
So some fellow students and me decided to go and have a nice time!
We ate delicious Japanese "Curryrice" in Duesseldorf and then went to watch the movie.
"Zatōichi" is a modern version of an old-fashioned Japanese samurai/action movie (series).
It is about an old, blind masseur who's also a talented swordsmaster. The old man travels around an one day he arrives at a small town that is threatened by some Yakuza gangs. He helps the inhabitants to get rid of the gangs and helps two geishas to take revenge for their parent's death.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zatoichi_%282003_film%29 The movie is not as serious as it seems!
The story has been made into a film many times before, but the particular movie I talk about is from 2003 and directed by Kitano Takeshi. (Do you know him? The one from "Takeshi's castle"! He's a pretty well-known allrounder, but mainly a director, actor an comedian! He directed the movie and performed the protagonist at the same time.)
Well, Kitano is known for his special kind of humor. The movie is exaggeratedly violent with MUCH artificial blood and many dead people. But it is also funny and there were some nice scenes about music and rhythm.
We laughed so much!
Although the movie is set in Edo period (1603-1868), the dialogues were in Modern Japanese.
It's a perfect way to learn how to curse mafia style in Japanese!!! Haha!
Seriously: I tried to avoid the German subtitles and understand what was said. Within the context of the movie it worked out surprisingly well. If it was in old-fashined Japanese, it would have been much harder!
Kitano Takeshi is a well-known actor and director, even in Germany. The only movies I know are Zatōichi and Battle Royale, but I decided to watch more of his works!
Even if they may be sick and crazy! Haha!
