I'm recommending this novel because I'm afraid that it is unknown or underappreciated among nowadays readers:
La Regenta (The Regent's Wife), by Leopoldo Alas (a.k.a. Clarín)
If you like 19th Century scenarios, ironic authors, dark gray characters, lots of details and a fine sense of humour, you'll love this book. Even if the main plot will remind you of Madame Bovary, I could not find a male character in Flaubert's novel as fascinating as Fermín de Pas. Being totally silly and improper in order to summarize it, he is a mix between the Slytherin Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series and Claude Frollo from Notre-Dame de Paris.
Give it an opportunity.
