they gave me money before letting me off in the middle no-fucking-where, and one can't live off stolen food and candy bars forever, so i chanced walking into a diner this morning. nothing big, nothing closer than twenty miles from anywhere, nothing too crowded and nothing not crowded enough. just your run of the mill truckstop, where you can get a week's worth of breakfast for five dollars. i ran into a man there, big hatch he called himself - but i'm getting ahead of myself - on my way out, leftovers safely in a bag, backpack on, ready to start walking again.
you look like you could use a ride, he said. i was about to say no, like always - not only is it dangerous, it's fucking dangerous. but my stomach was full for the first time in over a week and he had a strange honesty in his eyes.
where are you going? he asked. he had a whole day's drive towards... my direction before he had to head s... in his direction (this whole censorship thing is bullshit). so we bought a day's worth of sunflower seeds and settled in the cab of his truck. i don't remember what was in the back - i suppose it doesn't really matter.
big hatch didn't talk much. which is fine, because i didn't have much to say either. but he had coffee and sunflower seeds and he didn't ask questions when i would duck my head whenever another car came along.
and at the end of the day, he tossed me a water bottle and the rest of the sunflower seeds, refusing anything i tried to give him in return, and before driving off said: i hope you find who you're looking for.
have i really become that transparent?
