"Believe it or not, there are people who I enjoy the company of who would stop speaking to me if they knew what I was up to sometimes"
This bugs me to no end. People have an endless variation of world-views, of sets of morals, of ways of dealing with people and the world around them. People who don't realize this are blind... and people who think that everyone who disagrees with their own narrow view isn't 'worthy' to interact with- is immoral, should be shoved off in a corner somewhere- is just stupid. Or managing, quite adeptly, to not think at all. Sure: no problem with holding an opinion and thinking other people are wrong. But why cease to speak to someone because one thinks they're wrong? Melody Marler, one of my best friends, is a very devout Christian. A Southern Baptist, for goodness' sake. Well, I think that she's wasting a vast amount of her time going somewhere to worship something that doesn't exist. And I can't stand to see people wasting their time doing things that don't benefit them, that they don't enjoy, for reasons not their own. Yes. I tihnk that Mel is wrong. But she thinks I'm wrong, too: she thinks that I spend my life in horrible sins, and that when I die I'm going to burn in hell. We still enjoy eachother's company... though we hold different world-views we still get along just fine. I don't know about her, but from her I have learned a good bit about the traditional Christian mindset... Anyway, the fact that I think she spends her time and thought in a horribly wasteful manner doesn't make me not talk to her. The fact that she thinks I am doing awfully immoral things at every turn doesn't make her not want to talk to me. I could cite other people, but you get the point.
It's peer pressure in action, folks! *slight laugh*
It's a good way to get people to conform, though. Denial of desires until conformity. Ha.
I think I'll stop ranting now.
