I'm kinda bah-humbuggy about all these '90s shows coming back. It reeks of desperation, of greed, of pandering to the nostalgia of millennials.
One of these shows is The X-Files.
If you know me, and if you're reading this entry then the odds are in your favor that you do, then you know that I loved The X-Files. I was obsessed. I loved it, but I only watched the last 3 seasons out of a sense of obligation, and honestly, I barely remember what happened. I saw both movies, but I can't tell you what happened in the last one.
The first episode back was awful.
The second episode was a little better, but still not great.
But this third episode tonight, written by the legendary Darin Morgan, is great so far. It feels like a classic X-Files episode, which is no small feat, because the '90s were over 20 years ago. Everyone's aged, television has changed, the world is so different now.
You know how taste and smell are linked to memory? Well, it's the same with The X-Files for me. Mulder and Scully take me right back to middle school and high school. They are such a part of who I was then. It's kind of fun to revisit that.
Watching these new episodes is like a high school reunion. Like catching up with old friends over happy hour. It's nice to see how much we've all changed since then. And how, deep down, a lot remains the same.
