May Bank Holiday Weekend

I am freaking freezing. I don't think there's heat on in the house, and it's 45 degrees out, windy, rainy, and my nose and hands are chunks of ice. I keep blowing on them, drinking hot tea, but nothing lasts.

Megan's still sick. Basically the socialized medicine of England has told her to wait it out. Which she's been doing, without any improvement. In fact, she keeps getting worse. But today, on our second trip to the ER A&E (Accidents & Emergencies) Unit, she saw an actual doctor, who actually took the time to talk with her and explain things and ask questions. He was short, just barely taller than I am, and made jokes about Chicago, since he'd been there in February. He seemed the most helpful and most on-top-of-things out of the three doctors and two Nurse Practioners she'd seen. Here's to hoping she feels better soon.

The long bank holiday weekend has been spent lounging around. Either I've been in bed watching a movie from Blockbuster, buying drugs & food items at Sainsbury, Tesco, or Boots, or waiting at the A&E. Very exciting, I know, but necessary. The weather was shit anyway, so it didn't really matter that we holed up with the skipping DVD player. This weekend we've watched "Curb Your Enthusiasm" season 4, 1/2 of season 2 because the second DVD won't play (we've already watched season 3), "Children of Men", and "All the King's Men." "Curb" is always good, and the finale was hilarious. "Children of Men" was good but depressing. "All the King's Men" had Jude Law - other than that, it was a crappy movie. Sean Penn was overacting, as always; his hand gestures and accent were driving me insane. And Jude Law's character seemed to have conflicting motivations, or a lack of motivation to begin with, which, along with the whole atmosphere of crappiocity, made it hard to watch the movie. Ah well. Lesson learned. As much as I adore Jude Law, he does have some pretty bad movies under his belt.

Left for this weekend are "Extras: Series 1" and "Melinda & Melinda." I've already seen and loved "Extras" and Woody Allen films can go either way. So we'll see. Also this weekend we discovered by chance on television "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Even Stevens," both of which delighted me. It's nice to find good TV shows, and it's really nice when they come in semi-clearly.

I cannot believe it's almost June. Holy cow! Where is the time going?

tv, vacation, movies
