another score the technical front for oregon. i love reading about my home state leading the nation when it comes to social issues like city wide wi-fi. the folks over in morrow county have set-up a large wireless highspeed network over the city of hermiston. largely this came from the need to monitor and provide quick and effect evacuation ( Read more... )

Qwest. Shudder. How I hate them so. And their crappy-ass dial-up-like download, and overall connection speeds. Bastards.

I hate their over inflated prices. I mean, come on! They charge me 62.00 for
the business phone service at the Cafe. I'm switching over to voice-over-ip.
Know how much that'll cost me? 4.99.

those prices come from the fact that we're in a regulated state. because qwest owns the lines, they are the ones who provide service. that is, unless the local municipality votes to create a public utility, as beavercreek has done. bct is a non-qwest company, even though it runs on qwest lines. over all, bct is a lower cost communications company (about 2/3 the price of qwest) because of it's localness. it's publicly run, so the people have more of a say in its pricings, where as qwest is nationally run, and therefore wants to eek out as much money as possible. bct is not a governmental branch, like many anti-pud types would want you to believe. bct is actually a cooperative that is built from a membership of local community members. i'm all for localization of utilities ( ... )

I certainly agree with the idea of buying produce locally. I could even include some additional items. But, the attitude of buying everything locally can create the problem of hording our own money. Being that we are one of the wealthiest nations, we should be sharing that wealth with the production houses around the world. If we take the approach of buy only from us, then we are going to take the well earned money from the hands of people in other parts of the world. We will get wealthier and they will get poorer.

So, yeah on supporting our local farmer. But, lets not stop employing the Thai shirt maker.

This city wide wi-fi is great! it will help to flatten the strata of the haves and have-nots. This is also one of the gifts internet has given the world. People are so willing to give information, when everyone can get is as easily as the upper crest, we all benefit more quickly. I do like the image of the cities being behind the times, long live the surfs!

that would be serfs, though surfs is kinda fun too. Especially if one has the right kind of board to access the surfs.

Good thought provoking message. Yeah for the small towns. Small town does not always mean small thinkers. It is good to bennifit from not being so darned popular and in need of the fancy dancy qwest services.

I just want to make sure to say hi and see how wonderfull your trip has been so far. I will have to read more of your blogs to see what you have been up to.
