My roommate is hosting a Queer Kiss-In on the quad May 1st.
What is a Kiss-In?
It is a form of protest, actually. Typically queer, but not always. To quote my roommate: "Kiss-Ins have a proud place as political acts in queer history. Queer Nation used to do same-sex kiss-ins in places like malls in the middle of suburbia, a fun way to turn the entire homophobic anti-queer climate on its head. Recently, kiss-ins sprang up in the protests at the Republican National Convention."
Why?
Because, recently, our lovely HWS students went to a lax game at Syracuse wearing shirts that said "At least Our Mascot isn't A Fruit" which spawned an awful lot of discussion on our liberal campus. And... also resulted in school newspaper articles everywhere from "Let's all become porud of being Fruits" to "Homophones should have the right to voice their opinions. After all, those gays are voicing thier opinions." It was pretty interesting, but got pretty hostle (especially towards gay folk)... so my roommate's response is to host a kiss-in on the quad where people just go around kising each other (on the cheek, on the lips, on the hand, whatever is comfortable to the people kissing) to make a statement about it being okay to kiss (gay or straight).
It's interesting. I just thought I'd share. There's already like 30 people supposedly coming, along with another 25 or so that said they might be able to make it. And there's still a whole bunch still deciding. Plus, there may be people coming from Colgate and Ithaca as well.
I feel weird sharring this. I don't know why. I'm not gay. But I do support gay rights and acceptance in society as well, and I feel like my campus could use some more displays of acceptance. I think I'm going. I don't know why it feels weird to say that to you guys either. but it does.
