Lots of books have been read. I forgot how fast I could read if I really, truly enjoyed a book. And I had the pleasure of reading five exceptional books in a row.
Breaking the Wall Trilogy:
Thirteen Orphans, Jane Lindskold
Nine Gates, Jane Lindskold
Five Odd Honors, Jane Lindskold
These books are very much the kind of thing I enjoy in fantasy, but Sage found them heavy on the infodumps. (I didn't notice. XD) They've also hardened my resolve to learn to play mahjong. In deciding that, and doing the subsequent research/acquisition of mahjong books and cards, I realized how much I enjoy learning how to do new things. It lifted my mood more than I expected.
2/3s of The Inheritance Trilogy (not that one, this one):
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, N.K. Jemisin
The Broken Kingdoms, N.K. Jemisin
The Broken Kingdoms has a black protagonist! In a fantasy novel! THERE IS HOPE. The books themselves are so lush and Jemisin's prose flows beautifully. The plots are intricate without being overwhelming. I cannot wait for the third book, and from her blog, it looks like she has even more in the pipe. ilu, Miss Jemisin, pls to marry me.
I also added some nonfiction:
Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue, John McWhorter (English majors should read this)
Packing For Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, Mary Roach
The best part is I'm now at my end of May goal! I am finally actually ahead of the game for once. (I don't think I'll ever get more than a few books ahead. As fast as I can read, with as much time as I have, there are limits. Especially when I'm dragging myself through the book out of sheer spite.) I've been considering taking the last five slots of Mystery and devoting them to a genre I actually enjoy, or just reading a lot of Carl Hiaasen. I wanted to try some of the classic authors of mystery, and I have. It's not my thing.
LASTLY, I need five more recs! Well, four. One will be something by Lois McMaster Bujold, I just haven't sat down to figure out where I should start.
Edit:
I'm on goodreads now. <3
