I got up at 7:00 thinking I would get in a nice long morning ride like I did Friday and Saturday, but I was startled to see rain when I looked out the window. A light drizzle rather than a Texas downpour. Instead of a bike ride, I put on my Boonie hat and took Sheba for a long walk in the rain. We both got a little soaked, but it felt awesome. Such a pleasant change from the triple digit temperatures. In the park we came across a big turtle, a Red eared Slider, all by itself in a large open grassy area. I think the precipitation last night triggered its instinct to go lay eggs. There were signs that it tried to dig up the ground, but no way it could get through the dense turf and hard packed soil below. Also a terrible location for a clutch of eggs. A very busy area of the park. I picked the turtle up and walked it the 50 yards or so back to the creek, put it in the water, and watched it swim off. I thought that would be the best thing to do before neighborhood Crows (or kids) spotted it out in the open. I wonder if the toads will appear at my fish pond tonight and sing. They usually show up the first night after it rains.
