my grandfather is 80 years old and suffers from dementia. and yet, somehow, he remembers to make judgmental comments about anyone and everyone. he's opinionated and gruff, and tries to cover it up with his cute laugh, so you don't really know if any harm was meant. or done.

yesterday on the phone, my grandfather made a comment about how he doesn't like brits, and how he told my mother this just before meeting her friend, jean, who, of course, happens to be british. grandpa's reason for not liking brits? some distant cousin-or-other who happened to be british and who, after grandpa and his brother taunted him, tried to pound them to the ground.

grandpa then explained - this guy's problem was that he was an only child. "oh really," i pondered, "that was his problem?" "well sure," grandpa chuckled his naive little laugh. "you have something against only children?" "oh, well, they're just always alone." "yes, that happens" "you gotta relate! talk to people!"

(sigh)
