I forgot to mention that I asked one of the speakers, a professor from UT Austin actually, to explain why exactly gas prices along the Gulf coast went up right after Katrina. I think it was not only refineries that were out of operation, but some 60% or so of oil rigs were destroyed in the Gulf, which would of course cause some problems. You probably remember that my dad works for Chevron (since we all had a good laugh over it after one of Brennan's extemp speeches), and his job is basically to figure out where the oil can be found, and if drilling for it is actually worth the cost. So the oil might be there, but they won't drill for it if the cost is too great to justify drilling for the amount of oil they believe is there.
