I don't post very often, but I wanted to update.
Olin and I just moved to a very nice area in San Jose. It is a two bedroom, so we suddenly have a lot of space and actually might need more furniture. Except for a disagreement with our manager about what "patio furniture" actually is and some issues with AT&T setting up internet and cable, we are really loving our new place. It is very close to a ton of cute businesses and shops, and is much quieter than before. Hooray!
My other exciting news is that my school (Olinder Elementary, San Jose Unified School District) ended up making our goals for state test scores. We actually had the most gains in students scoring proficient and advanced in all of the district. The best part is that my class possibly had the highest scores, or close to it, in the whole school. I feel very proud, as it was my first year teaching. All year it seemed that the hard work I was putting in wasn't paying off, so it is very validating to see results. Of course, I spend the whole year complaining about how the state tests are not an accurate way to get a complete picture of student achievement, and really I don't think the test scores should be everything. However, it still feels good and boosts my confidence as a teacher.
School is starting soon, and happily I'm really looking forward to meeting the new class. I think that's a good sign.
