Yesterday Easyp and I went to the two big bookshops along Orchard Road after her (fun-filled) birthday (late)lunch. It's been a long time since I went into one. She encrusted herself in the Philosophy section reading Spiritual and I dug into Fiction while consciously avoiding the neighbour magazine section. I picked out the books I wanted to buy and lovingly went through the pages (and the prices) but didn't buy them eventually. I weighed the cost of the books against the cost of seeing them them slowly through that destructive process called yellow-spotting (or oxidation) on my unclimatised bookshelf. I chose the option of going to the library and borrowing a tattered version that can swim in my messy bag every day on the train ride without giving me scratch pains. Ownership is a very luxurious, satisfying thing, but I won't afford it now.
Maybe books are cheaper in Bangkok. I'm going on Friday --- anyone wants anything?
We also took out the Book of Answers (not the real title because I can't remember the title). You hold the book while asking a very intense question in full concentration, then open the book and the page you look at (TADA!) gives you the answer.
The book's answer to "Do I love F?" was
"Do not take no for an answer."
Good news!
I think F is going to give me a hotel surprise in Bangkok. I'm excited. When we arrived in Phuket town two weeks ago I was expecting a good room (i.e, with hot shower) in crummy Talang Guesthouse (where we stayed the first time we went there but in a room with cold water, fleas, a lot dust and the previous occupant's hair stuck under the pillow), but the taxi brought us to this funky (eclectic-chic? quirky? cool? fashionable? I give up: funky.) boutique hotel with a long terrace cafe styled in white wood and a large entrance space with colonial Chinese decor. The hotel room had a lot of floor space and a really cool blue porcelain sink. In the morning someone brought us breakfast. But we had to stuff it down our throats in 10 minutes because the boat out to Phi Phi was 830am and the minivan came ON TIME. As usual, I'll post the relevant pictures late(r).
