Hi all - in lieu of some sort of biography or nervous audition, I thought I’d share what I’ve been listening for the past month: Citizen Kafka and Pat Conte’s ‘Secret Museum of the Air’. The radio show was aired pretty consistently from 1990-1996 on WBAI (non-commercial radio station outta New York) and then again from 97-02 on WFMU (another radio station. bit weirder though). They both work at a funeral home now (at least one of them I think - they’re very secretive), and the other has been working on his shotput technique. I digress - there are a bunch of archives which are definitely worth checking out. The link here is to a great show on the roots of afro-pop in the 50’s in South Africa, and for folks who are interested I would also definitely check out ‘The Secret Museum of Mankind,’ a four volume collection of early (pre 40’s usually) recordings from around the world. Mr. Conte’s liner notes are not to be trusted however - I think he just made most of the stuff up. Who cares. There’s also a book that accompanies the set stuffed with photos. the post-colonial theorist’s wet dream.
So: here’s the Afro-Pop
show And here’s the site where you can find the
archives For most of them you have to use Realplayer, like the ‘unusual instruments’ show. The medium’s the massage, dude.
