Did anyone else realize(before going to see the movie) that Alex O'Loughlin(of Moonlight goodness) is in August Rush? Looking at least twice as yummy - and IRISH!! accent as in Moonlight(yes, it's possible).
Which means...lupinskitten and alexandral alert!
and the movie itself is completely glorious and epic and the most amazing film I've seen all year - counting Enchantment which was delightful :) but not amazing. Plus, did I mention Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Alex's Irish brother, who SINGS? Frequently?? And Keri Russell lighting up the screen, and the most glorious music I've heard since, umm, probably Amadeus? And oh yes, that is positively counting Across the Universe - August Rush is everything that movie could have been. My mother cried. I was just jumping up and down and squeeing and utterly UN-calm.

Synopsis:
A charismatic young Irish guitarist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and a sheltered young cellist (Keri Russell) have a chance encounter one magical night above New York’s Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, orphaned by circumstance. Years later, performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams) who gives him the name August Rush, the child (Freddie Highmore) uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth.

It has snow. And romance. And 3 stunningly good-looking and gifted actors onscreen in the same film. (cheers for both Keri Russell and J. Meyers making their big-screen debuts!!) And most of all, music. Music that makes your heart pound and your ears strain and your eyes glaze from the sheer loveliness of the joy(and heartbreak) projected onscreen. I was honestly skeptical of this movie - I wanted to see it very badly since watching the trailer, but was afraid it would turn out to be another Hollywood feel-good/everybody's happy-drama, with all the best moments in the trailers. I was, happily, wrong. It did start out shakily - the first half, while very good is not superb - above average most definively but perhaps not worthy of buying and watching over and over again. But the second half - oh, the second half. It's like Billy Elliott and Searching for Bobby Fischer only with more light and romance and drama. (The cinematography is exquisite, by the way - inflitrations of Pride and Prejudice in the gold light, and then there's the snow, and just everything). This film is mostly about 2 things:
1)Music - music that you love more than life, more than food
2)Family - August, or rather Evan's, search for his parents, and their search for him

Both unusual and under-used themes in Hollywood, and the thing is both are done so well in this film.

Suffice to say, I was swept away. I would(and probably will) soon write an indepth email about its highlights and flaws(oh, I know exactly what the best scene in the movie is - one involving J. Rhys-Meyers, not incidentally - and no, this time it's not my inner fan-girl judging that) but for now, as I'm not on my own computer and am sitting in a very uncomfortable spot, just know that if this movie is not a hit - and I have no doubt it will  be - I will cry and give up on American audiences forever. And. Go watch it. This is absolutely a big-screen film.
