Academy Awards, romantic life

LJ and I have decided to put some space in our relationship. :) (translated: I haven't been on here for two weeks and expect things to go on like that)
In the meantime, go and vote for who/what should win an Academy Award this year. Myself, I for once have few strong opinions as I've seen very few of the nominated films and have low opinions of the others-this year's crop has been, at least for me, of the sort you wait for DVD for. The only thing I feel strongly about is that Leonardo DiCaprio utterly deserves Best Actor for Blood Diamond-his performace was incredible(and so was the movie), I was completely shocked and blown away. (Not to mention a little weak at the knees. Think Titanic and add on something and you've got him in that film) But I think Forest Whittaker will get it for The Last King of Scotland and I suspect that he also deserves it. Oh yes, and that The Departed not win best picture, as those whom I trust said it was absolutely awful. Little Miss Sunshine will, I think, win Best Original Screenplay and I'm fine with that. Helen Mirren will most likely win Best Actress and she does deserve at least one(she hasn't ever won before, has she?), although I admit I have a soft spot for Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada(probably the best actress I've ever seen) and for Kate Winslet. And in films I have seen, please let the Academy show some sense instead of liberal politics/loving-agenda-leanings and give it to Cars instead of Happy Feet. The first was fabulous and the second, well, decent but rather ruined by an ad-hoc agenda inserted at pointless intervals. I have another soft spot for Mark Wahlberg and hope he wins Best Supporting Actor for The Departed-the only Academy Award I hope it does win. As for Children of Men, it's probably the single worst movie I've ever seen, and definitely one of the most boring. Let it not win anything.

In summary:

Wish List:
Best Picture-don't really know as I've seen so few, but I rather lean toward Babel. (If only Blood Diamond had been nominated. :( That film is so overlooked)
Best Actor-Leonardo DiCaprio, for Blood Diamond
Best Supporting Actor-Mark Wahlberg
Best Original Screenplay-Little Miss Sunshine
Best Actress-Helen Mirren/Meryl Streep
Best Animated Film-Cars
Achievement in Costume Design-The Devil Wears Prada
Best Documentary-they all look pretty awful to me, but anything but that self-centered pack of fabricated wishful-liberal-thinking that is Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, the media having done its usual prolonged and expert job of making the public accept as fact something for which the public actually has no knowledge or real proof of whatsoever. (*sigh* I can almost feel the outraged comments on this coming. But trust me. In 50 to 100 years, they will look back and laugh at us for ever believing in global warming. It will be a joke to them)
Best Original Song-Our Town, by Randy Newman, from Cars-this song is amazing, I thought at first it was one of my favorite bands, Simon and Garfunkel, for its sheer warmth and wisdom and the way it captures the best of what America really is.
Achievement in Cinematography-The Illusionist

Now here's what I think will win:
Best Picture-The Departed-potentially The Queen, but I think it will be The Departed
Best Actor-Forest Whittaker
Best Supporting Actor-this I actually don't know-could be any of the nominees
Best Original Screenplay-Little Miss Sunshine
Best Actress-Helen Mirren
Best Animated Film-Happy Feet(because the academy inevitably loves the agenda films and gives in to its weaker side)
Achievement in Cinematography-The Prestige(shudder)
Best Documentary-An Inconvenient Truth, for the same reason as Happy Feet

And for those of you interested in my romantic life, well, I'm getting harassed by Jock again-he and his friend have struck up an only half-mocking rivalry, which is both difficult and ironic as I admit on one level I'm drawn to them but would never go out with them. And Asian dude has completely lost all charm for me as I got to know him better-unfortunately, in spite of my literally and specifically telling him that I wanted our relationship to only be that of friends, he just doesn't seem to be getting the hint too well. And he's been talking to my friends, which vastly irritates me. In more cheerful news, things with Dan have gone up, down, and around without anything serious at all happening -for some reason we're rather awkward around each other-but now I'm going to be working on a project with he and my friend Sara, which should be fun and potentially has possibility. (Now if I could only behave naturally around him! I can do it so well around the other guys...Ah well).

And I've read a few fabulous books and seen a few fabulous films in the past month or so which I shall post about at some point soon as I can't clear my head of them until I've recommended them to someone.
