Fic- Past the Curtain

Mar 13, 2010 18:24

The blinds were finally lifted.

For almost a year it felt as if someone pulled the blinds down; the clarity of the window shielded by the material of the curtain.   Sounds were mottled, and the simplicity of the shadows failed to offer any distinction as to what was beyond.  For a year he managed to continue working with the familiarity of his surroundings while not feeling in complete control.  He was no longer in control, and it was scaring him. He couldn’t see what has happened, what was going on in the world around him.  It was as if he was thrown onto a plane on autopilot, not knowing the destination.  He struggled to pull the blinds up, to rip them apart, anything to regain control but he failed each time…

…Until today.

The blinds were finally lifted; he was able to see with clarity again. He wore black, no longer in primary colors, and that scared him. As his eyes freshly register the new scene around him, he feels his heart being tugged down. Wires dangled from above, computer screens were either black or broke spewing electrical sparks. Large ornate circular windows surrounded him, shining a light on the destruction before him. Smoke was in the area. He looked at his hands and saw with vivid clarity, the stain of blood.

His mind rapidly tries to make out what has happened trying to recall what occurred just moments before, when he was still trapped behind the curtain. Suddenly his eyes fixated on a single point.

His legs weakened, he collapsed onto his knees. His eyes begin to water; tears slid down his cheeks.  The blinds weren’t lifted because he fought hard against them; they were lifted because their purpose was over, and he was finally allowed to see what he had done. With blood stained hands, Brainiac’s objective was complete.

On the floor ahead of Clark, was the symbol he wore, burned onto the floor panel. Laying on the symbol was a lifeless body, of a girl, whose blood stained his hands.

“Chloe…”
