Daniel is turning grey at the temples. When did that happen? When I wasn't looking? Did age creep up on him? On us?
"Your hair needs cutting." I reach across and ruffle it, revelling in its well-remembered softness. I look at my hand and wonder where the time went. It's now old, like me.
You flinch and I force myself not to show the hurt I'm feeling. Emotions are too raw, too hurtful. They won't get us where we need to go today. Still, I feel a traitorous tear roll down my cheek.
"Daniel? It's me. It's Vala! Try to remember me!"
"Vala?" he says, confusion marring his handsome face. "Vala?"
"Daniel, you are my beloved and I am yours."
But he's gone back to remembering another time. "Sha'rae is my beloved!"
"Daniel-I…."
"You look familiar, do I know you?" you blurt, eyes brimming with the deepest blue.
I am falling into their twin pools.
"I am Vala…I am your Love," I say, not bothering to hide the tears. We have been on this ship for so long, and as I brush my beloved's hair, I know we will surely die here as well.
The time seems to stop as my mouth moves in slow motion. "I love you."
You sigh and it's as if all the breath is leaving your body. "Do I know you?"
The tic in your cheek is pulsing double-time. I daren't speak. My heartbeat pounds behind my ear and I can't think.
"Vala?"
"Yes, my love, I am Vala."
