Busy weekend. Jenn and I were up in the slack in Caroline on Friday afternoon. We got there in plenty of time and rode the horses in the arena before it started. Luke had a pretty good run. He was about 2 seconds off of the fast time. That may seem like nothing, but in barrel racing its a lot. However this was his first rodeo so I was really happy with it.
We stayed at my Grandparent's house Friday night. I haven't seen them in a couple of years so it was good to see them. We drove up to Wetaskiwin on Saturday. Relaxed for the afternoon. As a treat for ourselves we went to Huckleberry's cafe for supper. Supper was good but dessert was amazing! We had huckleberry pie of course. Absolutely delicious. We went and rode the horses after supper. Luke worked awesome. Turned his barrels and was actually starting to stretch out a bit. So at least he's getting closer to actually running the barrels instead of just loping fast. Thats the intention of this year, get him seasoned and actually running.
Unfortunately our run on Sunday wasn't quite as good. He sort of ran off after 1st barrel, turned second ok and then knocked third. It was mostly me, my timing was off and I didn't ride very good. I suspect a combination of the heat and not eating (bad bad me, I know better). But everything is a learning experience. You have to take the good with the bad.
Next weekend we are up in Delburne and Cadogan, two places I hadn't even heard of until now. They aren't that far away which will be nice. And we actually got good draws so we don't have to take any time off of work. I am so excited to be rodeoing again. I didn't even realize how much I missed it. I can't wait until Luke is really running.
We are going to give him the Panacur Powerpac. It isn't cheap, around $185, but if you wanna play you have to pay. Hopefully this will fix him up right. If not then its time to bite the bullet and haul him to Moore & Co. It should be here on Wednesday, they had to special order it. I read in Equus and mom mentioned too that to get a horse to shed out you douse them in baby oil, wait a day and then give them a bath. I hope it works or I'll just have two hairy, greasy horses. Wish me luck.
And thats the update on my last few days.
