I called Julia last night for her 25th birthday (and got Smiley on the line too, of course). They both seem to be doing well...except Julia's murderous instints seem to be kicking in again. Another two pets died this month.

This girl, I can't even tell you. She has killed more pets than I can even count. If you count fish it's in the dozens. Birds, frogs, hermit crabs -- she knows the local pet store like the back of her hand. We're talking, every few months she has some horrible story about how her bird got clocked by the food tray, her frog jumped out of the tank and dried up, her hermit crab fell off the desk and ran away...this time, her finch had an egg-laying infection of some kind, and her hermit crabs were left for six days without water.

(I love Julia. But her track record with pets is hilarious.)

Speaking of pets: Laure and Daniel apparently got a hypoallergenic puppy dog. I have no idea how that works. It's small, short-haired, white, and so badly behaved that I guess they're considering taking it back.

They also asked about our Southern trip, Brad. Smiley had thought that we intended to come down in the summertime. They both have Spring break in the last week of March, but they may be busy or out of town (in our town!) that week. I think we need to just pick a few dates and run them past them, just to choose.

Those of you with dogs: How much attention per day does a dog need? Like, what are the basic elements of daily dog care? How long can he go without attention? (In, say, hours.)

Not that I've been wanting to get a white hound and name him Cadfan. Nuh-uh.
