A Fine Potter Weekend

Went to see Prisoner of Azkaban with tahmthelame. Indubitably the best so far. There was much glee.

Of course I paid way more attention to the possible foreshadowing of Books 6 and 7 than I did to the actual movie. I have comments on the movie itself but those can wait. Re: the "hints", my guess is that they're very, very, very subtle (except for the R/H shipping. Honestly). Here's what I came up with:

  • Remus treating Harry like a son ("Go to your dormitory and don't come back out!") Their relationship may become much more developed since it's fairly possible that Lupin will be the last surviving Marauder.

  • Dementors can fly! When they join the fight, this could be helpful in determining where and how they can attack.

  • Hermione mentioned that she doesn't like heights. We haven't seen her flying yet in the books, broom or otherwise. Will this be an impediment to something she tries in the future?

  • Hogwarts has some nifty lockdown mechanisms. 1-5 odds (though we know what that's worth) that they need to use them again.

  • It was interesting to see how the Shrieking Shack was set up; no guards, but barbed wire. Dunno, just interesting to consider how easy or how difficult it would actually be to get into and out of it.

  • This is the stupid one: Buckbeak eats dead ferrets, and there's only one person in the books at all associated with ferrets. Just a thought.

  • There was a lot of wandless and incantation-less magic. I don't know how it fits into magical theory but it's interesting that JKR didn't nix it.

  • My sister thinks the clock might be something. I don't. I think it was for decoration, and to drive home the "time" theme.

  • They really beat home the fact that Ron hates spiders, mentioning it twice. I wonder if he'll ever be forced again to face them -- given that there are huge ones in the forest, and there was one in the GoF maze, and Hairy Macboons exist but we haven't met them yet.

  • Harry's thwarted under the invisibility cloak because the twins see his footprints. He's going to want to remember that, but since it technically didn't happen in the books, he might fall for it again.

  • Tom from the Leaky Cauldron was very, very interesting. I loved his car. Which raises the question: Has he ever been known to do magic in the books? Could he actually be a squib -- or even a Muggle?

  • Am I the only one who noticed Sirius getting bit by a werewolf?? My rationale is that the bite doesn't turn animals into werewolves, so a bite received in dog form wouldn't transmit. Not a foreshadowing, just a comment.

I assume we were all looking for foreshadowing you couldn't pick up from the books, so certain elements that could easily come back don't count.

We stayed through the credits, which were marginally worth it. As we were leaving the theater, we heard one of the staffers who was sweeping the floor:

"So what do you think were the hints they put in for the next books?"

There are more Leaky readers out there than I thought.
