Media Recap

This year, for some reason I thought I'd write down all the books I read and movies I saw over the course of 2008. Somehow the lists actually turned out pretty complete. The number of novels I read was kind of depressingly low, but the graphic novels, man, I really racked up. So I'm going to list them here, in no particular order, and maybe make a ( Read more... )

See, I didn't read anything leading up to Evolve or Die, so I was just like, "Well...that was different. Moving on." I liked the art. I guess since I'm not plugged into the comics continuum (which is a rant for another day) it was hard to take seriously. I think I just chalked it up as an imaginary story and forgot about it. Plus I think I read like four other comics that day.

With 100 Bullets I was expecting something different than it was...for some reason I had in my head there were only a hundred bullets to be had and the story would count them down, and then the second avenger got a full hundred and I was confused. I didn't really get into the gritty urban asethetic and I don't think I'll be following up on it.

I'm a big ol' fan of John Constantine. So far I've really enjoyed about every other story and the rest are still pretty entertaining, so I'll keep reading those for sure. I don't really understand the connection to the punk scene, of all things, but I'm kind of counting on the series to grow out of that. For "cleverly engaging, dully bizarre, and unreadably vulgar," I agree with all of the above!

Marvel apparently decided to do the same thing.

Constantine the character I really enjoy- the first I ever read of him had him... selling his memories to an Aztec death god to bribe it to kill of demons, then using voodoo to banish the god itself. That was pretty compelling. Every other writer, though, I think I hate, so it's still kind of a mixed bag.

I think my first or second Constantine had him trying to sell his soul...which caused a panic and crashed the soul stock market. I mean, holy crap.

One of the big arcs has him successfully selling his soul three times over- and the demons end up keeping him alive to prevent a war over who can collect.
