Applicious!

I brought in apples to work this week, for samples, so that I can take orders and deliver them on Monday. This year I used a paper punch and a sheet of March of Dimes address labels to make little round tags for each apple to identify the variety. Last year I didn't, and it was all, "I tried this one...it was sort of red...and a little bit sweet, but kind of tart.... What was it?"

So this year I was clever and even made a little chart entitled "What Am I Eating?" It's working, people are learning varieties, one guy is sticking the tags on his watch, and I set out the order form. Five minutes later here comes Jens with a half-chewed apple. "Vhat is dis vone?"

(Jens is hilarious. He grew up in Eastern Germany and speaks like four languages. He is also like a hyperactive puppy dog. Anything he says, imagine it said very quickly.)

I say, pointedly, "Does it have a tag?" He never answers, but the unchewed portion looks clear, so I assume not. That makes it a yellow delicious. "Was it really sweet?"

"Vell I tried a few," he says, in hyperdrive. "This vone is really sweet and fruity, I love it. Den I tried a red one--" You also have to hear the gutteral "r"s. "Den I tr'hied a r'hed one, it vos damn d'hry."

I assume he got yellow and red delicious respectively, because he never mentioned tags--but with Jens, they might have been there and he just never knew it. He hustles away, calling over his shoulder, "I just vant to order t'e r'hight vone!"

I hope to gosh there was no tag.
