sit_good_dog tagged me with a meme, so...here.
1. Total number of books I've owned: Hang on a minute.
*counts*
There are 152 in my living room. I'm guestimating roughly that in my bedroom, and another amount like that in storage with my parents, so ... four hundred fifty?
2. The last book I bought: Oh no, I have to be honest. La Bella Durmiente, which sounds cooler than it is. It's the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty, all packaged nice into a kids' book and made Spanish. I found it cheap on a website. It hasn't arrived yet....
3. The last book I read: Completed, or worked on? The last book I finished reading was The Days When Animals Talked: Black American Folktales and How They Came to Be by William Faulkner. Published 1977. I got it at the wicked-cheap library clearout sale, so it cost probably a fraction of a dime. It was really decent. The last book I read from was La Sombra del Viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, of which I try to read a few pages every night. Equally, perhaps surpassingly, decent.
4. Five books that mean a lot to me:
Interestingly, I don't see books as being "meaningful", per se: I like them because they're entertaining or they ring true, or both. The only book that really gets the "means a lot to me" label is the Bible. So, here's the closest thing in my mind: five books that I think everybody ought to read.
The Dark is Rising sequence, Susan Cooper
A generation before Harry Potter, Will Stanton turned eleven.
The Elements of Style, Strunk & White
Know the rules, then break some.
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
Love, art, rhetoric, and the depravity of man.
Kidnapped, Robert Lewis Stevenson
It'll carry you away!
Till We Have Faces, C.S. Lewis
"I saw well why the gods do not speak to us openly, nor let us answer. Till that word can be dug out of us, why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces?"
5. Tag five people and have them fill this out in their LJs...
If you say so!
