Waste and environmental issues

Probably sounds very small in the great scheme of things, but I'm contented at this present moment because... I've managed to order a compost bin for us and get us a new blue bag for recycling. We've been trying hard for the past few months since I moved in here, because of our political and spiritual principles, to reduce the amount of waste we're ( Read more... )

I hope your compost bin comes quickly - I ordered ours in May, and they are still quoting me 14-21 days for it! Id go and buy one somewhere else but Ive already paid them - :)

Our local tip also recycles plastic bottles and cardboard. Since Ive been separating those and taking them there, our wheelie bin has never been more than half full. Just shows what we chuck away that is useful!

Recycling must be different in different parts of Derbyshire Amber 'cos we live in the Amber Valley area & we have a green wheely bin for general waste, a blue bag for newspapers, junk mail etc, a yellow smallish box for glass, an orange smallish box (same size as yellow) for foil, card (but not corrugated), tins & cans - that's it. Collection of the wheely & the boxes is alternated so that in this heat my food waste is sitting in the bin for up to 2 weeks & believe me it stinks!!!! I am more than happy to recycle but we have a ludicrous system (& if we want to recycle plastic bottles we have to take them to where the bins are, same with corrugated card - not everybody drives or is able). Many other parts of the country (Forest Town, Nottingham where my daughter used to live) do it differently. Each house has 2 wheelys, 1 for general food waste & 1 for all recycling wich is sorted at source rather than on the street like ours is. In Manchester my friend even has a wheely for garden waste too (we have absolutely no garden waste ( ... )

I know the compost bin scheme is county-wide, interesting to hear how other areas within the county are handling things though. The nationwide scheme that backs recycling up is Incentive 21, imposed from central government, but at present local areas have leeway to do things very differently. Sheffield have a whole blue bin for recycling, but it doesn't cover much by way of what you can recycle in it... The only downside to the way NE Derbyshire are handling it is that we get our black bin collected every fortnight, so you don't want to open it by the end of two weeks. Sometimes our food waste ends up in the bin of the Chinese restaurant down the road so we don't have to ;-)
