We have a dog that appears to be stray wandering around our estate at the minute. It's a HUGE dog, we think a cross between a Great Dane and Rhodesian Ridgeback (though when I've just wiki'ed that to get the spelling, it could even be purebred...?)
We are currently feeding it as it is so skinny that you can count it's ribs at a distance and has a collar on but no ID tag. No-one in the neighbourhood seems to know where it's come from, so we're assuming it's a Credit Crunch Critter and has been abandoned.
Currently:
Dogs Trust won't take him unless he's been to the pound, same as
The RSPCA .
The Dog wardens give the impression they won't come unless they know where the dog is as it needs "to be handed in" rather than reported so they come and find it...
Unfortunately, as Stephen is scared of dogs, he's not keep-able (and I don't know I'd have the energy for walking such a big dog anyway!) :(
We've been trying to catch it in the garden (I saw it sleeping there last weekend and so have fed it daily since (though we think Izzy might be stealing SOME of it!) and he seems to have a pretty regular routine coming to ours a couple of times a day with about 4pm being the best time for us to try to catch him. He was there today munching on some dog food, but as I went out the front door to try and shut the front gates, he must have heard the door go and was out of the garden before I could blink! Big dogs can apparently lope along at a lazy gait at a much quicker speed than I can run! He avoids people so moves off quickly if anyone comes near him.
Anyone got any ideas on how I can catch him, or does anyone know if the pound will come out even if the dog isn't at hand...
Also - if an owner can't be found, does anyone want a REALLY big (but looks really gentle natured) dog as I'd hate for him to be put down because I'd handed him in and Dogs Trust and the other dog shelters are so full they couldn't take him...
