I’m just disappointed as, when I transferred teams in August 2008, and during my first appraisal as the Advanced Design Group Technical Administrator position (a month after I joined), I was told that the degree that I was hoping to undertake would be very relevant to my new role and that they were very enthusiastic in saying they would try to support me, financially and, if possible, with study leave, and that this degree could be a stepping stone to a future within the Assessor's side of the ADG team (rather than the administrative side).

However, at my last appraisal (this year) I came to understand they never "had time" to put my proposal forward (I’d proposed I pay per Open University module and get refunded should I pass, rather than be paid for it up-front - I was told that, "if people are being sponsored through a degree it's a full time degree and they get sponsorship and work placements etc. and as the company don't usually sponsor people through OU they'd need to investigate the procedure for this"). This was a surprise, as I’d been led that it was all in hand and, as I’d only just received the results of my first module, I wouldn’t have been able to put a finance claim in before then. I'd been waiting to hear the results of my proposal and their "investigation" into how you'd go about paying for OU training.

Obviously, by the time I found this out, the recession had hit and the company had introduced "interim measures for the training budget" - ie there IS no training budget - and I was informed that, despite me believing that I had the support of my team, and of AECOM, in wanting to better myself, my team leader had not taken the time to progress this - even to my line manager. They told me if I wanted to take it further I'd have to investigate this myself and so I did. I completed the training request form and passed to my line manager straight away...

However, I recently found out that my line manager (I assume in association with my team leader) didn’t even put it forward to either the ADG Business Unit Director or the Building Engineering BUD. I have a suspicion that it's because they don't want to look like bastards for not chasing it up in the first place.

I realise now that this is not an AECOM training policy issue, but more that my team didn’t feel I was worth the effort to put things forward before this interim measure came out and now, since more redundancies have been announced, despite giving me the impression that they would be supportive, they are just not. They don't want to look bad so they don't give a damn and to top it off, they then bitched about the amount of annual leave I’ve had off to complete assignments, and I had to take annual leave for an exam, and... grrrr!

The thing is that now, since more redundancies have been announced, I don't even think I have a chance to get any kind of support. So next year I'm going to get the same "oh - you're taking ANOTHER holiday to do an assignment!?" and "And you're taking MORE time off for an exam!?"... *cry*
