For lack of anything better to do, Inara had the radio going and was stretched out on her bed, reading a book.

The door was open.

After this morning's talk with Karal, Gavin was tired and somewhat sad but doing a valiant job of not showing either emotion.

He leaned in the doorway and said, "Good book?"

Inara glanced up, and a wide smile broke across her face when she saw Gavin. "So far. Going to come in, or just look picturesque there in the doorway?"

"I look picturesque?" he asked, sounding amused. "I thought I looked rumpled."

Now that he mentioned it, he very definitely did. Inara sat up and pulled her feet out of the way, making room for him to sit. "Is there a rule that you can't be both?"

Jaina was very pointedly not going up to 527. If he couldn't say goodbye, he could come to her to say hello. That's why after going for a walk, she came back to the room and asked, "Mind if I work here or should I leave?"

"No, of course not!" Inara rolled onto her side to watch Jaina. "What are you working on?"

"I'm breaking a toaster," she said simply, getting on her knees on the floor to pull the crates out from under the bed. "I'll fix it afterwards."

She wasn't sure what she'd been expecting to hear, but it wasn't that. "Why?"
