Anything that kept Gavin out of his room and that stupid voice he was going to take. So, as soon as he could, he found his way to Inara's open door and went to knock the door frame before just deciding to say something.

"Everything all right?"

Inara had been deep into contemplation of her reflection and color choices (was it more of a cyan, or an azure? What about indigo?) and hadn't heard the knock.

She shrieked in surprise when she heard Gavin's voice, and turned to face him without thinking.

"...that's unusual makeup," Gavin said since it was the first thing that came to mind. "In a good way! It's very...highlighting."

"It's blue!" She would have buried her face or put on a veil, but there was obviously no point to it now.

"It's nice?" Maybe that wasn't the right answer. "Is it a new trend?"

Inara unleashed a very grumpy torrent of Chinese invective at him. "No. Religion class had some unexpected consequences."

"Oh." Oh. Oh, foot in mouth. "You...didn't put that on your face on your own?"

"Why would I--it's blue!"

"I don't know!" Gavin flailed a bit. "I...don't know how that stuff works! I was trying to be nice and supportive!"

She couldn't help the desire to eyeroll, could she? "Thank you, then. I'm sorry I yelled near you."

"It's okay," he said and waved a hand. "What happened now?"

[ambassadorinara]

"I believe that Professor, er, Biff, laced the tea with a substance which immobilized those of us who trusted him enough to drink it," and wow, she wouldn't be doing that again anytime soon, "and then he painted us blue. Didn't Karal tell you?"

"I haven't seen Karal," he said, frowning. "Was he supposed to?"

"No," she shook her head, "I just thought he might have, if you'd seen him, since he was in the class, drank the tea, and was painted as well."

"I haven't seen him in a few days," he said, shaking his head. "You're the first person with a blue face I've seen. Does it hurt?"

"No. I just look like this." She frowned for a few seconds, then smirked at Gavin. "Karal must have been with Evey."
