Moving in general is traumatic. Having to pack your entire life into boxes and lift it piece at a time is an evil thing. I don't think it's a coincidence that very few couples I know survived when they went through long distance moves. When I would be living somewhere and thought I wouldn't be living there for more than a year or two, I found that I physically wouldn't unpack things that weren't strictly necessary--I also wouldn't buy anything without throwing the equivalent away

I still had boxes packed from when I moved from Boston. I am actually moving into Brian's place. Today while I was moving, James was moving out. Currently the living room is overflowing with my possessions and poor Phoenix spent most of the day hiding amongst the boxes and furniture.
I do get the added bonus of arranging the place while Brian is in Missouri. Then when he gets back, we get to move things around again! At least it will all be inside though.
Have fun rearranging the house! Taryn and Tim used to do that. When one would go out of town for a day or two (or just be in tech for 16 hours while the other had off for the day), they would rearrange the living room, or the work room (or the garage, or the kitchen) to whatever way they wanted it. (Tim was infamous for re-carpeting, repainting or buying and installing new major appliances in this manner.) Then when the first would return, they would rearrange it back as soon as they were the one home. (And in some cases, make returns to home depot of large appliances.) It was the most hilariously passive-aggressive thing I'd ever seen
