They all had strengths and weaknesses. Jake learned all of them - had to - but he wasn't the only one. Even Rachel is sure, if Tobias would let himself think about it, he'd realized it had to be her. It had to.
Everyone else had so much more to...
"...we were never going to get a happy ending, Tobias." She leans back until her spine touches the bar at the kitchen, and lets her shoulders slump, looking at him. The words are heavy on her tongue.
"There was no way out. And I wasn't going to risk you and everyone else on... god, it wasn't even a chance. We all knew Tom would turn on us the first chance he got."
"Oh, shut up," Rachel snaps, starting to pace again. "What was I supposed to do?"
And old advice, advice he'd given her on how to shut Jake up when he was trying to lecture her-
"What would you have done?"

She knew the answer to that. He would have given anything to keep her safe.
But he wasn't going to let her cut him off like that.
And he's just going to ignore that second question.

"It was either this or die with you!" Rachel yells back - and her throat tightens at the thought.

Her smile, if it can be called that, is grim and satisfied.
It's a rhetorical question. Jake hadn't asked Tobias or anyone else. He hadn't really asked Rachel, either. He hadn't needed to.
He knew her place.
And so did she.

But it especially shouldn't have been hers.

he asks with a scowl in his voice.

Her gaze sharpens on him. She'd tried to be gentle, to be honest.
"If I'd given up, we'd all be dead and everyone on Earth would have a Yeerk in their heads!"
