A medical marijuana bill has been floating around in the Illinois State Senate for a while now.
"Qualifying conditions: cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), Crohn's disease, agitation from Alzheimer's disease, and nail patella. Doctors may also recommend medical marijuana for cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures (epilepsy), and severe and persistent muscle spasms (multiple sclerosis)."
Here is the bill. The lead sponsor on the bill has just been named President of the Illinois Senate, so this bill may actually have legs.
But! The bill needs to be called to the floor for a vote by January 13, 2009.
If this is something you're interested in supporting, here is the easy way to contact your State Senator and encourage them to (a) call the bill to the floor and (b) support the legislation. You can leave a personal message, too, which will greatly increase the chances of your letter being read. While this bill imposes a 1,200 person cap on the participants, at least for the first three years, I know this bill could potentially help a couple of people reading. Even if it's not something you're personally interested in doing, passing this bill would certainly help those people who do want to alleviate their suffering in this way. It only takes a minute or two. Why not express support?
Alternatively, use this form to encourage your state rep and your state senator to get the bill out of the rules committee and vote for the bill, respectively. You'll definitely want to personalize those, as they're short and sweet.
