Easter Weekend

Apr 16, 2009 22:55

I've been very busy lately.

Been starting to wake up earlier every day now, because the job training has shifted. Now I am going to Walgreens every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to do training at their Distribution center. The transportation provided by the Vocational Rehab has also shifted to an earlier hour, which makes things harder on me...and I think it is starting to affect my health. Usually, any time I have to get up before 6:00 I turn into a zombie for the rest of the day. Just a few days ago, I noticed that my alertness was down and that I had a sharp pain in my chest whenever I moved from at-rest. Today I have been feeling much better, although I kept falling asleep during the ride there and back, even though it was anything but comfortable.

Major progress has been made on my room. The walls are all painted now; essentially all that remains to be done is the woodworking (trim, window frames, doors, ect). And to think that it only took two years and four months!

We had a tornado hit the Friday before Easter. I'm sure many of you heard about the sudden bad weather here in the upstate South Carolina. While we didn't get any actual twisters here, Dad said that he saw a trench dug through a small island in a lake near Anderson. This leads me to beleive that the twister was only touch-and-go, as we didn't have any real damage in town...although we did have an entire block of telephone poles fall across a four lane highway. Half of Anderson was without power.

Luckily, the movie theater was still operational. For Easter, I decided to see Dragonball: Evolution.
Now, I know what you are going to say, and honestly, the film was nowhere near as bad as the early rumors where saying it would be. One does have to take into account though, that this movie is based off of Dragonball, and not DragonBall Z, as it was originally slated as (and still erroneously advertised as by some ignorant parties). It was surprisingly truthful to the source material, although it did take some liberties in order to make the story of Goku more accessable to western audiences. For example, Goku does go to high school in the film, although the movie in no way focuses solely on his time there, and the rumors of Krillen being replaced with a new original character where flat-out false (Krillen does not appear in the movie at all). Goku is portrayed as an innocent and naieve boy who tolerates his grandfather's attempts to teach him fighting skills and ki, although he really just wants to be normal and blend with his peers in high school. His entire world changes when he receives the four star ball for his birthday, and while out wooing a girl from school (Chi-Chi), The evil Piccolo Diamoh kills his grandfather while looking for the missing Dragonball. Before Goku even has time to recover from the shock, he is accosted by another who is looking for the legendary balls, Bulma.

Thus begins the tale as told in Akira Toryiama's retelling of Journey To The West. For the most part, I'd say the movie got it right. The fight scenes really capture the spirit of Dragonball, especially the one in the middle of the film in which Goku takes on a bunch of thugs from school. The characters are generally hit-and-miss; Goku is passable while Bulma and Master Roshi are excellent. Piccolo is brooding and evil without being over-the-top (and is definitely not yellow). His side-kick in this film is Mai, which shows the attempt to blend the Emperor Pilaf and Piccolo Diamoh sagas. Still, I found the film wanting for a better budget; there are places in the film where this shows through.

While it is definitely not oscar material, if you are looking for a fun martial arts homage flick with zany characters and quirky humor, Dragonball: Evolution is ok. I can see why they downgraded the film to start things out, and the rumors are that not only has a sequel leading into DragonBall Z been greenlighted, but that the budget for the next film is going to be absolutely immense! It may end up being the film that this one was going to be before it was neutered by Fox and the new director.

Speaking of Fox (different kind of Fox here), I have been invited to attend DEFCON in Las Vegas at the end of the summer. The reason being that most of the members of ceg_lylat will be there, making it sort of our Star Fox RPG convention, much like how the Gathering Of The Gargoyles is the unofficial Gaming Guardians con. Still, it's quite a commitment from me to go to this one. I am hoping that by working over the summer, I will be able to afford to attend without relying too heavily on my friends in the roleplay. It is possible I can do that if the pay will be as good as I am hearing it is, although that still leaves the issue of transportation; Las Vegas is so terribly far away...It's literally on the opposite side of the nation from me. Even that isn't insurmountable though. I'm in discussion with my friends from the game, and I am sure we will come up with something. I am honored that you guys are actually requesting me there and are willing to pitch in to get me to come. I hope I can make it down there all right to finally meet you all. <3

As for the Gathering, I do not think I shall be able to attend both cons, and even so...the Gathering is in the middle of the summer, and I know I will not have enough saved up by then. The reason why I might be able to attend DEFCON is because this convention takes place in the late summer, giving me at least two extra months to save up for a cross-country trip. So, yeah...I am sitting The Gathering out this year, sorry guys. However, next year might be a better opportunity for me to attend (assuming it doesn't move out of the greater United States).

So, it has finally come to this. It seems that all that fear mongering by the Republicans during the election has lead to a man killing three police officers over fears of an Obama gun ban. It's just discusting to think that good people are dead now because some brainwashed loony beleived whatever the Bush lackies where saying at the time of the election.

Also, it seems as though jobless benefits are running out, even though the recession is not quite yet reversing. This could make a bad situation much worse, depending on how the recovery is handled.
