Poem- Math Homework

Feb 14, 2009 21:26

I mentioned this in the last entry.

I like this one a lot too. It's probably my second favorite from the chapbook. It has a strong, steady rhythm like a clock actually ticking. Plus there are 12 stanzas, for the 12 numbers on the clock, and 24 lines for the 24 hours in a day. In the chapbook I decorated the paper this was on to make it look like a small sheet of looseleaf paper. I even used a toothpick to make the holes in it.

Math Homework

Tick. The ticking of the clock.
Tock. Math problem sits unsolved.

Tick. The tocking of the clock.
Tock. Don’t know how to begin.

Tick. The ticking of the clock.
Tock. Pencil is poised to write.

Tick. The tocking of the clock.
Tock. No marks are being made.

Tick. The ticking of the clock.
Tock. Paper is blank and bare.

Tick. The tocking of the clock.
Tock. The numbers blur and fade.

Tick. The ticking of the clock.
Tock. Another minute gone.

Tick. The tocking of the clock.
Tock. No one around to help.

Tick. The ticking of the clock.
Tock. At last, the answer’s known!

Tick. The tocking of the clock.
Tock. And quickly jotted down.

Tick. The ticking of the clock.
Tock. And then begin again.
