Poem- Lady-in-Waiting

Jan 04, 2009 12:03

Another poem from my chapbook. The idea came to me in the middle of the night, as many poems do. I was actually doing just what is described in the poem.

It has really short and choppy phrases, a lot of them with prepositions. I really like that about it. In the chapbook I made the paper look like a cell phone, like it's a bunch of text messages, because the choppiness reminded me of that, and because the poem mentions texts and phones.

Lady-in-Waiting

The cracks
In the paint
On the ceiling
Of your room
Form a perfect map
Of the Mississippi.
You know because you've stared
At them
For hours
Each night
As you lie wrapped
In sheets,
Yet still cold
In your bed.
In the silence
Of the house
You wait anxiously,
Hoping the phone will vibrate
In a moment
At the reciept
Of one last text
That's never sent.
