New
linebyline line, "take my tears." It reminded me of a song by Fuller Still, Strength to Breathe (one of my all-time favorite songs). The chorus begins, "Give me strength to breathe again/ Take these tears away/ Let me know that hope remains/ Hold me tight, and stay"
So that was the inspiration for this poem. It rhymes, which is odd for me. And the rhythm is very distinct; it has a children's-nursery-rhyme feel to it, which works (in my opinion) because it's basically giving advice, and most of the time the audience for advice is children.
Also, some of the lines have syllabification defined in them. It reminds me of hymns, which obviously have syllables altered to fit the music.

Calming the Storm (Take My Tears)
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Thats what they always say
But what if you are the falling star
Tumbling down, down, all night and day?
Never let that twinkling star
Wink out of sight, they tell me.
But what do you do when you can't find the light,
Like the switch is locked up with a key?
Just keep swimming, swimming on through
The murk and the mire of doubt.
But what if your tears are o'erwhelming?
What if you see no way out?
Then, you let the tears come,
You let them rush down,
And it opens your heart and your soul
To that sweet, subtle, beautiful sound:
Your heart longs to sing, your wings to unfurl
To carry you out of the storm,
If only you cry out to Him who cares
You'll find yourself dry, safe, and warm.
Just call to the Lord in your suf'ring
"Lord take my tears and my pain!"
And a wonderful peace will surround you,
Peace will seep in o'er the stain.
"Lord, take my tears in the palm of your hand
And my trembling form in your arms."
He'll answer your cry, so earnest and plain
So you can combat all alarms.
Look for footprints in the sand, they say,
When you feel lost and alone.
But I'd prefer feeling God's arms around me
Steady and strong as pure stone
So, the waves may crash and foam around you,
Threaten to pull you in,
And though they may succeed at first,
In the end it's always God who will win.
