Well, after much procrastination, and a couple of distractions, I've finally completed my character for Arc's RP. I based him largly on myself, which is probably why I was able to type so much about him, who knows me better than me, right? ^^ Well, without any further ado, I present eight pages worth of information on Malachi Sythe. *Bows and pulls curtains*
Basics
Name:Malachi Sythe
Reason/meaning of name: Malachi is derived from the Hebrew language, meaning Messenger of God. His parents had him while going through a very hard time in their lives. Marital problems between them, one on the brink of suicide. After a string of events, things lead to the impregnation of his mother. This came as a surprise to the couple, as for years, they had tried, to no avail to conceive a child. Upon his birth, the couple saw it as a sign from God, that
things would get better, and so they called him, their messenger from God, Malachi.
Nickname: N/A
Birthdate: December 17, 1982
Astrological Sign Sagittarius
Physical Appearance
Age: 22
Eye Color: Deep Brown
Weight: 173 lb.
Body Type: He’s not in bad health, not athletic, though. He could probably be a pretty good at various sports and such, but he just finds them boring.
Skin Tone: Being of Mexican decent, he has lightly dark skin.
Predominant Feature: His pony tail is probably the most noticeable part of him. It reaches down to his shoulder blades.
Hair Color: His hair is jet black.
Hair Type: Wavy and doesn’t mess up easily. People tell him it’s very soft for a male.
Hair Style: He has his hair medium length on top, with about three to four inches of hair reaching, just atop his eyes. On the back, he has a pony tail down to his shoulder blades.
Looks Like: He often dresses in dark blue jeans and colorfully designed shirts. He walks upright, with good posture, a habit he gained from choir. Always being told to stand up straight, to sing better, he began to walk as such all the time. When he’s with friends, he’s relatively talkative, and friendly. When he finds himself alone, however, he becomes distant, and tends to stare out at nothing, seemingly in deep thought.
Healthy?: He’s fairly healthy, considering he doesn’t exercise hardly at all, he gets bored with physical activities, likes sports and such, but he doesn’t mind manual labor.
Physical Disabilities: N/A
How does he/she appear?: As a teen, he was always thought to look older than he was, but now, he’s thought to look just a bit younger than he is, evidently, he hasn’t changed much, physically, from his teenage years.
Glasses/contacts?: None
Height: 5’10”
Distinguishing Marks: He has a scar on his arm, but it’s easily concealed with a shirt.
Favorites
Favorite Color: Blue
Reason: He’s always loved the ocean and the sky, both of which happen to be blue, in the right light.
Least Favorite Color: Yellow
Reason: It’s not so much that he doesn’t like yellow, as he doesn’t like too much of it at once, gets annoying to his eyes.
Favorite Music: He’s always had a soft spot for piano compositions from composers like Nobuo Uematsu.
Reason: He like almost any music, but when he hears beautiful compositions, he feels a sense of warmth and completion, much like how he feels when he looks up at the moon.
Least Favorite Music: Rap
Reason: He can’t stand rap, it throws him off his ability to think coherently. He begins to hear only the irritation of the music and it doesn’t allow him to concentrate. He’ll blatantly tell others around him to shut off the horrid sound, one of the few times he isn’t kind to people.
Food:: He loves pasta and Chinese, he drools at the thought of chicken potstickers.
Least Favorite Food: Jalapenos, he was always criticized by his family for being the only Mexican in the family that didn’t like spicy food.
Literature: There isn’t many books that he’s read, that he didn’t like, so he likes pretty much anything. He’s quite fond of classics, though, Shakespeare’s works, Of Mice and Men, etc, etc.
Favorite sayings: There are actually many saying that he holds close to him, he spends much time looking up quotes and using them in he daily life, but two that really stand out to him are, “Only those who dare to fail greatly, can ever achieve greatly.” “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”
Expletives: He tries not to curse too much, but he won’t think much of the occasional, “Dammit!” or “What the hell!?” He’ll usually have to be very enraged to use harder terms, and he’s not easily enraged.
Transportation: He has a car, nothing special, it’s seen better days, but he prefers to walk and use the Subway. It seems to relax him for some reason.
Daredevil or Cautious?: He doesn’t really worry about things, but he won’t go out of his way to do crazy things.
Habits
Smokes: Doesn’t smoke
Drinks: Swore to himself never to drink.
Hobbies: He likes to write and sing, mainly. He’s very good at both, and finds much joy in them. He also enjoys playing video games, particularly RPG’s with great stories.
How’s he spend a rainy day?: He rather fond of the rain, it soothes him. But I’m assuming this is asking what he does in his spare time. Besides looking out into the distance, at the sky, rain, etc., he spend much time playing RPG’s. He will sometimes spend days on end, without sleep, just playing, assuming he has the time, what with school and the flower shop. He loves the thrill of playing someone else, in another world.
Background:
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Type of Childhood: Here’s where his problems started. His parents had been all too appy with his birth, and thought that their problems would end. But soon, the husband, who was already an alcoholic, got involved with narcotics. As time progressed, the father got worse, more and more psychotic each day. He would become a monster, already, with alcohol alone, but now that he was under the influence of narcotics, as well, he became unstable. Malachi’s mother
sheltered him as best as she could from things, but he could still see what was happening. He saw how his father slowly lost his humanity, and could do nothing about it. Even with all this, he maintained his status in school as a remarkable student, and he soon grew to live with things as they were. All the years that the father had been getting worse, not once did he hit either Malachi or his mother, though he came all too close, on several occasions. Malachi could stand the bi-polar disorder and the rampant mood swings, and as he grew older, he adapted to it. However, one night, he returned home to find his mother crying on the floor, weeping hysterically. He asked
what had happened, only to get “nothing” as a response. He removed her hands from her face to see a large red mark on her cheek. He examined her arms, to find more marks, she had been hit. By now, Malachi was much older and much stronger than a small child, as such, he confronted his father, threatening his life, if he were to ever touch his mother again. The father did not respond well to the outburst, lashing out at Malachi. Sober, unlike his father, he easily put down the man. He did not see the steak knife, that his father had gotten from the nearby table, and was cut deeply, down the left arm. He ignored the pain, as he fought the man and promptly knocked him
unconscious. After the ordeal, he and his mother quickly dropped the sad excuse of a man from their lives. He was to be imprisoned for many years, either way, which brought a great amount of relief to Malachi. After seeing what became of his father, he swore to himself, that he would never let himself become a monster like that. He holds a deep loathing resentment for his father, and just as much a hatred for alcohol and drugs. However, he keeps his hatred and father a secret, he feels that if anyone finds out how his father was, they would think of him the same way.
First memory: He remembers a lullaby that his mother used to sing to him when things would get hectic.
Education: Even with all that went on through his childhood, he was a very accomplished student, very bright. As a result, he received a scholarship to Rochester University in New York,
where he’s currently studying Psychology.
Religion: He was originally a Christian, like his mother, going to church on Sundays, etc, but he began to doubt the religion, not God, but the Bible itself. As such, he’s a kind of independent follower of God, he prays occasionally, but on his own, he doesn’t feel he needs a church to connect spiritually.
Finances: He doesn’t have much money, but having gotten a large scholarship for college, he only needs enough for himself, and whatever extra he can use to help out his roommates. He works at a flower shop. (Weiss Kreuz plug =P)
Family
Mother: He takes very kindly to his mother, she’s always been there for him, and he cares for her more than anyone he’s met.
Father: The only person on the planet, who Malachi truly hates. He can’t stand even the thought of him.
Siblings: Only child
Extended Family: He only knew his grandmother, but she had died when he was 11. Anyone else in the family, was scattered throughout the country, and had never met him.
Attitude
Greatest Fear: He has almost a phobia of actually drinking any alcohol, or rather, what it’ll do to him. He’s fine just being with people who drink, but if he’s asked to drink, he’ll at first give a simply decline, and if pushed, he’ll push back.
Worst thing that could happen to him: For him to become like his father, he’d come to hate himself.
Thing that would throw his life into turmoil: The death of his mother, anytime soon. He’s well aware that people are going to die, but he’s not ready for her to die, just yet.
Most at ease when?: He’s most at ease when he’s looking up at the moon, particularly while in Central Park.
Most ill at ease when?: When he’s in love, and he doesn’t know what to do about it, or what to do about a situation he’s in, concerning love.
Depressive?: He’s not really depressive, usually an upbeat and optimistic guy, but he can get pretty down when his love life doesn’t go the way he would hope.
Priorities: Doing the right thing, is usually what he tries to do the most.
Philosophy:He believes that there is a lot of pain in the world, but the best thing we can do, is try to live in happiness with what we have. Even when times are bad, he always says to keep going and to wait for the happiness to return. He also believes very strongly in love, he believes that once two people truly love each other, they will find the ultimate happiness.
How he feels about himself: He doesn’t think he’s anything special, but he doesn’t think negatively about himself. He just is.
Past Failure: It’s not so much of a failure, as a feeling he had. When he was in the fight with his father, he wanted to kill him, he genuinely wished to God for him to be able to murder his father. He hated the feeling that he felt then, and he’s never told anyone that he felt that way.
If granted one wish?: He’d probably wish to be happy with someone he loves. He’s genuinely loved only a handful of girls in his life, and there’s always been something to stand in the way. He longs to find someone he can love and be loved back with.
Personality
Greatest strength in personality: His greatest strength is probably his fortitude. He’s very philosophical, and it’s given him a strong mind, he can be very hurt, emotionally, and still find the
strength to keep going. And though he may be very philosophical, he doesn’t show it as much as he thinks it, he’ll often clown around with his friends, at first glance, you wouldn’t think of him as
being all that intellectual.
Greatest weakness in personality: Though he has a strong belief that things will turn out all right, this sometimes leads him to be slightly naive and not let problems that’ll come back at him interfere with what he wants to do.
Soft Spot: Malachi has a soft spot for beauty, be it a girl, or a sunset. He loves nature and the moon particular, he’ll gaze lovingly up at the sky, alone or when he’s talking with someone.
Biggest vulnerability Being hurt by love. When he falls in love, he gains a huge emotional connection with that person, but if he’s hurt by unrequited love, or having to break things off, for whatever reason, he’ll be crushed, and it’ll take a while for him to recover.
Traits
Optimist or pessimist: He’s an optimist at heart, he usually sees the negative side of things, but he chooses to see the benefits in life.
Introvert or Extrovert: He’s not the most outgoing guy in the world. In fact, if he doesn’t know you, he’ll probably ignore you, unless you make a move to say hi. He’ll usually keep to himself, except with his friends, once you’ve gained his friendship, which isn’t hard to do, he’ll be much more talkative.
Drives and Motivations: He usually is motivated by doing what he wants, but because he mostly wants people to be happy, he’s often driven by the want to help others.
Talents: He, as you say, has a way with words. He can come up with beautiful things to say, and can sometimes be very philosophical with those who involve him in something that intrigues his mind in that way. He’s also told that he sings very well, being the only male in his choir put a lot of stress on him to be the best.
Extremely Skilled at: He’s very good at writing, but he doesn’t enter in any contests or the such, he feels that he should write only what comes from his soul, and can’t be for commercial
sort of things.
Extremely Unskilled at: Sports. He hardly plays sports of just about any kind, he doesn’t really mind too much if a friend were to ask him to play, but he just doesn’t find that much entertainment in playing. Evidently, his lack of practice has made him weak in most sports, i.e., basket ball, baseball, foot ball, etc., etc. Though he could probably hold his own in non-aerobic sports, e.i., archery, etc.
Good Characteristics: He’s usually very gentle, and romantic, he doesn’t like real violence, though he enjoys a good bloody horror movie/game, or fast-paced action flick/game. He’s an “intellectual”, as many would describe him, and he knows how to keep a cool head.
That’s not to say he acts like this outright, he’ll often act as a teen, laughing and hardly showing his intelligence.
Character Flaws: He’s sometimes what some would call, unrealistic, he usually sees the bad ends of a situation, but he closes a blind eye to it, and focuses on optimism. This can sometimes lead him to be hurt badly when things don’t go as he plans, this has particularly effected him in relationships.
Mannerisms:When he’s bored or just zoning out, he’ll sometimes take out the band in his ponytail and run his fingers through his hair, half consciously, half subconsciously. If he’s never
met a person, he won’t likely go and introduce himself first, though once the other initiates a confrontation, Malachi becomes much more friendly.
Peculiarities: He often says hello and goodbye with foreign languages, despite having little to know knowledge of the actually language itself. Even Spanish, which his entire family is
able to speak, except himself, something he was also criticized about, apart from not liking spicy foods.
Biggest Regret: His biggest regret is also his biggest secret, he regrets to his soul ever having the horrible feeling of pure hatred and vicious urge to kill his father. This is partly why he says that he hates no one, which is almost true, excluding his father.
Minor Regrets: He doesn’t usually have regrets, but he does wish to God that things had worked out with one of his past relationships. When he gets into a relationship, it’s only when he
has strong feelings for the person, and so, when things don’t work, he’s shattered inside. Each time he finds someone he truly loves, he wishes and prays that he’ll be able to live happily with her, though it’s been to no avail, so far.
Biggest Accomplishments: Living this far without going insane from the depression he goes into when a relationship doesn’t work out for him.
Minor Accomplishments: Getting into a good university, it would be a large accomplishment, but he felt it came a bit easy to him, so he doesn’t think much of it. Plus, his mother always would tell him he’d “better” get into a good college, jokingly, but as though she knew he’d do it. So he heard it enough to make it as though he was meant to be there.
Darkest Secret: He had a large fight with his father, as a teen, which ended in him having a scar on his upper arm, and his father behind bars for many years. During the fight, however,
after he had incapacitated his father, he was filled with a feeling of pure hatred for him, and an incredible urge to kill the man. He’s kept his father a shadow in his past, to most people, and he’s never spoken of the horrible feelings he had while holding the knife, looking down at his father.
Self-Perception
One word to describe himself: Intellectual
Paragraph of how Malachi sees himself: Malachi doesn’t think he’s anything special, just another person in the swarms of people on the planet, as it is. But that’s not to say he thinks that he thinks like everyone else. He considers himself to be a bit of an odd thinker, mostly because of his view on life, not many people he’s met, are willing to be particularly optimistic. He considers himself happy and relatively carefree, though he’s always had a whole where he hopes to fill it with another’s love.
What character considers his best physical characteristic: He has a particular fondness to his hair.
What character considers his worst physical characteristic: He doesn’t like his stomach, he thinks he could sculpt it, but he’s never put the time into doing it.
How character thinks others perceive him: He thinks others see him as being smart, but not very much, which is what he wants, he doesn’t like to show off intelligence, and the such. Though, he’s fairly sure people he know are aware that he has a big mind, seeing the sort of things he’ll say from time to time.
What he’d want to change about himself: He’d want to not feel all the pain he gets when his hopes are ravaged.
Would he be happy if this changed as he wished?: He wouldn’t feel the pain anymore, but it would take away from his emotional side.
Interrelation With Others
Divorced?: Never gotten that far in a relationship.
Has he ever cheated in a relationship? He has never cheated, and never considered it. He makes a point to be completely loyal, when he’s in a relationship, though he won’t think anything of flirting, if he isn’t with anyone.
How does character relate to others? If he’s alone and has never met a person, he won’t say much, but once you talk to him a bit, he opens up rather quickly.
How is he perceived by...
Strangers? When alone, “Is he okay? He’s just been looking up at the sky for like an hour.” With friends, “Such a nice fellow, isn’t he?” =P
Friends? He’s a good guy, has his quiet moments, but fun for the most part.
Wife/Husband/Lover? Though he’s had intense feelings for girls on several occasions, he’s never had the luck of keeping the relationship going, something always happens. Evidently, he doesn’t have anyone who fits this description at the moment. However, when he is in one, it’s often, “God, I’m so lucky to have met him,...” There’s often a “but” after that, i.e., “but it would just be too hard to keep it going.”
What do family/friends like most about his character? Most love his optimism and how he usually knows just what to say.
What do family/friends dislike most about his character? Also his optimism, when it comes to chasing unrealistic goals, and becoming terribly hurt when things fall flat.
Goals
Immediate Goals: All he really wants is to be happy, but going through school as smoothly as he has, is a plus. He also wants his friends to be happy, when the people he cares for are happy, then he’s happy.
Long-term Goals: He has a dream of meeting his “one true love”. He hopes that someday, he’ll be able to live happily with someone he loves deeply.
How does he expect to accomplish these goals? Well, just as he’s been doing so far, living as he wants, and doing what makes him happy. He never really looks for women, but they seem to just appear before him, without him realizing it immediately. Once he has his eyes set, it takes him a while to take them off.
How will other characters be affected? Good, hopefully, seeing as he just wants them to be happy.
Problems/crisis
How does he react in a crisis? Malachi isn’t easily surprised, so it has to be something really unorthodox or frightening to make him lose his cool.
How he faces his problems: He usually tries to think logically, but ends up going with something really unlikely, possible, but very unlikely.
Kinds of problems he usually runs into: Malachi often has trouble deciding what to do in a relationship, he’s very romantic and the such, but if a problem arises, like an impending long-distance relationship, he will be lost as to what exactly to do.
How character reacts to new problems: Like any other problem, he’ll try to think out a reasonable way, but if an easy way isn’t in sight, he’ll try for the more outlandish route.
How character reacts to change: He’s relatively passive, if he can’t avoid the change, then he’ll adapt accordingly.
General
Favorite clothing: He likes his casual clothes, but he particularly likes a chance to be in a suit or tuxedo.
Why?He just enjoys dressing up fancy.
Least Favorite clothing: Designer clothes over $100.
Why? He can understand 110 for a tuxedo, maybe, but 300 for a single shirt, is crossing the line. He’d rather take something from the clearance bin at a random store, for 5 bucks. He can’t understand anyone buying a single piece of clothing for more than $80.
Jewelry: N/A
Other Accessories: N/A
Drives: A car, rarely.
Where does he live? In an apartment with three of his best friends.
Where does your character want to live? He loves New York, it’s a great place to people watch, it has good views, too. But if he could, he’d like to live somewhere with more nature, so
to speak, cleaner.
Spending habits: He’s not all that conscious of money, he won’t spend more than he has, but if he has it, and he wants something, it’s gone.
What does he do too much of? He zones out on his own, too much. He’s fine when he’s with friends, but on his own, he zones out.
What does he do too little of? He doesn’t share his feelings enough. He tries to hide when he’s hurting, but the other’s can see when he’s in pain.
Most prized possession: He would say his mind, but if we need a material possession, it would be his games. He’s not terribly fond of them, to the point of risking his life for them, but he really enjoys escaping into his fantasy worlds.
Plays an Instrument? He sings, quite well.
Uncategorized
Person secretly admires: It’s no secret, but he admires his mother.
Why? He admires he fortitude, and the fact that she was always there for him, as a child.
Most important person in character’s life before the story starts: His mother, he’d be torn if she were to pass in the near future.
Why? See above.
How does character spend the week before the story starts: Like he always has, nothing interesting to speak of.
And as long as I'm making an entry, an update with Xenosaga. I'm nearing the end, and should get back to playing it later today. I'm also planning on buying the original, almighty, Xenogears this next month. ^_^ All hail the Xenosaga!
