I watched the scene again after reading your thoughts. My favorite part is still where Cloud turns, and there is Seph's chest RIGHT THERE. I was confused from the beginning about the idea that Sephiroth had hunted down Cloud's mother, who begged him to spare Cloud, and then cut her down. It doesn't make sense to me, but maybe the remake will show more of a personal resentment on Sephiroth's behalf toward Cloud, who had a loving flesh-and-blood mother.

Sephiroth's entire speech is confusing. He wants Cloud to do him a favor and run away? I've seen speculation that he's quoting Cloud's mother and tormenting Cloud with it.

There was so much in the OG that I didn't understand. When I played it again after Crisis Core, I thought when Cloud fell into the church it was Zack's voice in his head. "Last time all I got was scraped knees." It wasn't until a few play-throughs later that I realized Cloud was remembering his fall with Tifa when they were kids. This game is not straight-forward. That's why I loved Part 1 so much.

OOOH, I didn't think of that! Of course he'd resent Cloud for having a good mother. Now it makes sense that he specifically went after her...now I'm visualizing a starting-to-lose-it Sephiroth skulking around Nibelheim until he spots a woman of the right age who looks related to Cloud.

Nibelheim. As always, I can't wait to see it and I am DREADING it. You know Crazy Nomura made that shit go down on my freaking BIRTHDAY? LOL

The "run away" thing is puzzling me, too. I understand Seph asking for Cloud's help at the end, it fits my SaveSephy narrative, but then, why tell him to run away, and from what? Why keep messing with him if he needs Cloud's assistance with something? I saw a theory video suggesting Seph intends to take over Cloud's body, as he currently may not have his own.

I assumed that for so long too, that it was Zack's voice! I'm kind of sad that it's not. (I guess Remake shut that down once and for all.) I loved the idea of Zack basically spying on the entire game via Cloud. :)

This is what I love about the remake. Anything is possible! Zack spying on the game through Cloud? Sure, why not? Advent Children made it clear that both of them could see what was going on without them. (Creepy...)

Maybe the "run away" from Sephiroth was simply so Cloud wouldn't fight him. Seph is so crazy it's hard to tell.

The ending was SO confusing to me. I loved it, though. Anything is possible now. They knew exactly how to suck me in - Zack surviving. I know I commented here before that, when I saw the beginning of the scene on the flats, I howled. How can you do this to me? How can you make me watch my beloved Zack die again? But then he didn't.

Yes! It would've been so cruel to show Zack's death again...even though I'd heard the spoiler about him living, I still couldn't believe my eyes, and cried so hard I'm surprised I didn't wake family members up.

True, crazy people are hard to apply logic to. And it's no help that I have a Sephiroth right here, as whenever I ask him about this sort of thing, he says that canon-him is too dissimilar to himself for him to be able to explain "himself."

If you ever have a bunch of free time and need a laugh, you need to see the Machinabridged FFVII parody (what they've got up so far) on YouTube, it's amazing, and in it, Zack IS the voice in Cloud's head, not always being helpful. For instance, Zack kept encouraging Cloud to fight the zolom, all "Dude, you can do this. You're not just a SOLDIER. You ARE SOLDIER." Also, Aerith's mother sells drugs, and it was Game of Thrones that set Sephiroth off in Nibelheim. :) Let me know if you ever want the links.
