Meme: 13 Fanfic-Writing Facts

Meme gacked from merfilly.

1. Why do you write fanfic?

Because I have all these ideas in my head; it's how I get myself to sleep, imagining different things that happen.

2. When did you write your first fanfic and which fandom was it for?

Gah. Um, probably about 10 years ago, and it was...Star Trek: Voyager?

3. Which fandoms do you, or have you, written for?

Heh. 40 fandoms and still going strong, baby!

4. Do you read much fanfic or do you mainly write?

I read far more than I write. In many more fandoms than I write. Especially now with all the writing required for my Masters' classes, I just want to veg when I take a break.

5. What comes easiest for you when writing? (dialogue, descriptions, plot, characterizations, humour, angst...)

Narrative, I think. I sometimes put way too much expository narrative in my fics. I can't imagine doing a dialogue-only fic; narrative only, I've done a dozen times.

6. Which genres do you mainly write? (action, angst, dark, drama, horror, humour...)

Romance, humor, fluff. I used to write a lot more crack fic, and I guess college has matured me away from that (Woe!)

7. Which genres will you not write?

Aside from bad things happening to bad people (The Biggest Joke/The Joker), I don't really write horror, dark fic, death fic...and I definitely don't write rape fic.

8. Are reader comments/responses important?

More reviews don't really get me to write more, but they're definitey important in keeping me interested in writing, especially if I know someone really wants to read something I have mentioned while it's still in the WIP stage.

9. Do you use a beta reader?

Yes, pretty much 98% of the time. Sometimes a holiday or deadline for something will loom too close once I've finished something, but I'll generally have someone look it over after I've posted and then fix the errors.

10. Which is your favourite character to write fanfic for and why?

Generally I end up writing stoic guys who think too much and don't know how to let themselves feel. I'm not sure why; I'm female, a bit of a wimp, and this might be a case of writing what you don't know? But then, I write Kon almost as much as Tim, I wrote Duo just as much as Heero, and Jim and Blair were about equal with me too, so the snarky guys who get the job done with a quip and smirk also intrigue me. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. *shrug*

11. Which are your favourite ships (including friendships) that you write the most?

Tim and Kon (or Tim/Kon), lately, but I'm growing fond of Jack/Ianto and Ianto and Tosh. Also, Doctor and Rose (or Doctor/Rose), though while Nine is my favorite, I have a hard time writing him; he's darker than most of my stoic guys, and I want to do him justice.

12. Do you have characters that are so strongly established that they're in your heads?

Mmmm...not sure. I've got some characters (like Xander, Jason, Ianto) who I want to write fic for and sort of float around in my mind like it's a waiting room for the next fic I write. And sometimes a song will get stuck in my head (like Handlebars for the Ninth Doctor, My Immortal for Jack Harkness, or Little Bird for Stephanie Brown) and I keep thinking of what I could write with that character.

13. Which characters are you most comfortable doing a POV for? Which is the hardest?

The stoic guys, I guess. Funny guys are pretty easy too, since I generally write short humor pieces with them. The more complex a character, the harder it is to think like them (Ninth Doctor, Batman, Ianto Jones). And I still don't know how I managed to write the Joker so well that one time.
