This story is amazing, and I regret that whatever review I write for it simply won't reflect just how unbearably fantastic it is. I love the idea of Mercy's loyalty to Lex, which is supposedly absolute, being broken essentially over Lex's plan to kill his son for his own personal gain. It's such a human, oddly heartwarming catalyst for change, and I think sometimes we forget that no matter how fanatical Mercy is, she is still human, even if she's misguided.

Then there's the way she's concentrating on the father-son link between Lex and Kon, and completely ignoring the Mother-Son feelings she has for Kon as implied by her own thought processes here. Mercy was of course closely involved in creating Kon-El, and would have the maternal instincts to match Lex's paternal ones in relation to the clone. The fact that she's repressing them to the point she's not even consciously aware of it is beautiful, and brings a whole other layer of meaning to his story (e.g.: no matter how fanatically devoted Mercy is, maternal instincts, even subconscious ones, still make her pull back). And she's not making a full turn around into complete selflessness, either, which would be out of character. She wants to save Superboy, but afterwards she plans to take over everything.

Then there's the whole idea of how different the world would be if Mercy did save Kon, and I can't help but think how amazing this story would be as canon, much better than the crap DC did put out. But that would've involved permantly killing Lex, which the editors were unwilling to do, even as they destroyed Cassandra Cain, killed Bart Allen and Kon-El and Dana Winters, took a whisk to Tim Drake's brain, and otherwise trampled over everything I loved about the DCU.

Magnifique!

Mercy is repressing her maternal feelings for Kon mostly because I didn't even realize that she was doing it. Occasionally i write a story where the reader ferrets out some significant plot point that I overlooked; thanks for showing it to me, and I'm glad you enjoyed the story.
