Playing Nurse for a Day...Or Perhaps a Week

My mom had her first carpal tunnel surgery today. The one for her right arm. The second surgery will be for her left hand, but she decided to wait for that one; so she won't be completely incapable of taking care of herself. (For example, she wouldn't be able to, er, clean up after using the toilet if both her hands had just been operated on.)

But she's done with the surgery, and she's doing just fine. She's a tough woman who can face anything, and I don't just say that because she's my mom. I say it because she's always had to face difficulties. I won't go into them, though, because this is my journal, and I have no right to write about things personal to her. She would get her own journal if she wanted to publicize all her hardships (though I think it would be more profitable and meaningful for her to write a novel or series of novels, featuring, or at least implementing, her life).

Even though she is so tough and all, she still needs help, and that's where I come in. I drove her to the hospital, stayed with her through the surgery (in the waiting room, of course) and the recovery (in the recovery room, off course), and then drove her home. Her arm will probably be sore for the next few days, so they prescribed some pain meds for her. Other than that, she is physically fine, but she upset her stomach during her period in the recovery room by immediately drinking the crappy coffee provided. They offer weird-ass crap to people just out of surgery, however minor that surgery might have been. Honestly, I don't agree with (because I don't see the logic in) giving caffeine-intense coffee or sugary sodas like Sprite and Coke (also caffeine-intense) or other such beverages to people who have just awoken from surgery and a drug-induced sleep. The body should be resting, not having crap pumped into it. The recovery room works against itself by offering the patients crappy stuff. Yeah, they offered water and would probably provide milk or juice to those who request it, but not many people take advantage of these when the "fun stuff" they usually drink is around. I rant partly because I have worked in a health store, partly because I am part of a medical family, and partly because my mom's upset stomach kept us in the recovery room for an extra half-hour (maybe longer?). I don't blame her; she wasn't trying to bring nausea upon herself. But she couldn't have had it if they didn't.

Aside from my irritation about that, I get to take care of my mommy, which makes me happy.

P.S.
Coconuts are awesome.
