Guess who lost her debit card this weekend? Me! It was the most terrifying thing I saw/experienced this Halloween. Carol and I stopped at the ATM on our way to a Halloween goods/stuff store and Liquor Barn, and I definitely got my money and then drove off without retrieving my card. Ugh. It took me a good hour to realize I'd left it there, and when we went back to see if it was there, it wasn't. Maybe the machine ate it, but it's also very likely someone else came along and took it. I called up my bank's service number to cancel it and had to wait for an available associate for several minutes. Thankfully, Carol was super patient with the situation and with me, and she really helped keep me calm throughout (thanks, Carol! though I suspect your patience and kindness stemmed partially from your desire for us not to end up in a car wreck resulting from my distraction and resulting in our possible demise, andI certainly understand and of course appreciate your help!).
The second associate I spoke with (second of three) confused me greatly when she said my credit card was already canceled. Really? That it was canceled in September? Wait, what? Of 2006. Um, no??? She said, "Well, I'm looking at your profile with us, and you have a checking, a savings, a debit--"
"Yeah, my debit!" I said. "Oh, wait..." Realizing. "Is a debit card different from a credit card?"
"Yes, it is."
Comprehension suddenly dawned. "Ooooh! Okay, see, this is why my dad is always pushing me to learn about my financials and such because I wasn't aware there are different cards for that. Yeah, um, I need my debit card canceled then."
As I attempt to explain my idiocy and join in on the joke, the associate lady is laughing at me. And laughing super hard. I think it was the funniest thing that had happened to her all day. She wasn't mean about it at all--I just felt (and still feel like) such a fool for not having known this.
So the associate lady transferred me to a third associate who could help me cancel my debit card, which seemed weird to me, why she couldn't go ahead and cancel my debit when she could cancel my credit. Every moment was super pressing because what if someone charged a shit ton to my card? What if?? Hurry!!! Thankfully, no one went and charged any money to my card (at least not in a timely manner), and I successfully had my card canceled, and my new one will be mailed to me sometime this week. Sadly, it will arrive at my home address (ah, my lack of foresight to mention I need them to send it to my Louisville address), and I will not have it until my mom either delivers it to me herself or mails it to me. *sigh* But nothing horrific happened as a result of this stressful event, so all's well. : )
In other news, in attempting to find my own freaking bank without the help of my GPS--the branch closest to my apartment, the bank I have driven to several times prior to Saturdday--I ended up at the airport. The airport. SO out of my way. Not even close. And then my crappo GPS tried to take me all the way downtown to the big bank there when I know it was not the closest one to me at the time. *sigh* Oh, Louisville, when will I know you so intimately that my GPS will not stand in the way of our loving relationship? O geography!
