I am up too late again. I really should be in bed. But I just seem to find so much to do on my computer. It's simply amazing. Part of it is because I am doing two projects that really interest me. For Men and Masculinities, two people and I form a group, and our topic is how Batman's masculinity is portrayed in the recent 2005 and 2008 films. My team members are talking about the masculinity and maturation of Batman and his relationship with Rachel Dawes. Me? I'm talking about the Joker and how he's completely unhegemonic, and that's what makes him Batman's greatest enemy. Or at least, it's a curious way to look at their ongoing rivalry. After studying the films and thinking about them from this perspective, I've gained so much more appreciation for the trilogy-in-motion, and I just spent at least two hours pouring over The Dark Knight, speculations about the third movie, and past incarnations of The Joker. And I want to know more.
Damn me and my intense thirst for fandom knowledge.
Anyway, Sunday or Monday night or so I began working on my group's powerpoint presentation.
For fun.
I'm only taking the class pass/fail, but I'm working my ass off on the project because it's not really work. It's actually kind of fun. And I'm working excessively on this because I'm procrastinating on paper-writing and other projects and such, which is a problem, but I almost don't mind. I'm still proud of the work I'm doing on this one thing even though it doesn't matter so much for my grade in that class.
But anyway.
I read earlier that the events of The Dark Knight take place six months after Batman Begins and that a collection of oneshot anime works compiled in the OAV Gotham Knight (kind of like what Animatrix was for The Matrix trilogy) are actually "cannon" and apply to the Batman universe and story-line Christopher Nolan (with others) has created. Which is awesome and definitely going into my gift-to-me purchases for Christmas. I mean...it's fuggin' cool, yo. I'd sound/type as hyped up as I feel, but I'm dreadfully tired and dreadfully aware I have a quiz over Gulliver's Travels first thing in the morning and really need to go to bed. Desperately need to go to bed.
But I also want to put the offer out there: does anyone want to go Christmas shopping in Lexington this Saturday? Take a little study break for the afternoon or so? I went Christmas shopping for my fam. on Black Friday, and I'm not done, and now I'm all in the shopping mood and wanna amass gifts and doodlies and whatnot for my brothers and cousins and 'rents and stuff. So if anyone has some free time (or plain old is willing to make some free time), call me up or Facebook me or comment or whatevs.
And with that, I bid you all adieu.
batman,
christmas,
friend,
shopping
