I heard MLK speak once, 1965 I think, at a university auditorium event. He was so impressive, that after I went up to near the stage, and asked if it was possible to get a copy of his talk. A reporter gave me his print copy. But, when I looked thru the typescript, what MLK had said, the core of his message, was not on the printed pages.
I think there are two conclusions one can draw...
-- Speech is a performance art, not to be captured in print.
-- Go with the flow, not the script.
Best wishes, and glad to see your posts.
ps - No longer facebooking, took too much attention away from projects want to do. Prefer Livejournal.
I absolutely understand your attitudes about face-booking. I've really been waffling back and forth about getting rid of mine... the benefits seem worthwhile, but the information trafficking is intensely disturbing.
I bet hearing MLK, live, in person, was incredible. And I agree with your conclusions. Speech as a performance art is something that I really want to study and practice more. I am especially interested in it's relationship to spoken word poetry.
When I watched President Obama's State of the Union address, I was cheering at the TV and completely moved, but also thinking, "Man, how dynamic would this be IN PERSON?!" I would love the opportunity to be in the audience for one of Obama's speeches, he has a certain charisma that I've never seen in the political arena in my lifetime.
